Charlie Chaplin Charles Spencer Chaplin was born on April 6th, 1889 in London, England. Him and his half-brother Sydney were raised by his music hall singer mother, Lily Harley. He didn’t have a father figure growing up because his birth father was a drunk and left him not long after his birth. Sadly, his mother suffered severe mental issues and had to be admitted to an asylum later in his life. However, she was able to support her family for a few years and teach her youngest son the way to stardom. Charlie’s fame started at an early age when his mom lost her voice during a show and they pushed 5-year-old Chaplin onto the stage. He also put wonderful use to camera movement. In his film, “The Immigrant”, he moved the camera in a way that made it look like the boat was swaying from side to side. In this film, Chaplin also uses the long cinematic shot because he is standing 20-30 feet from the camera. Chaplin wasn’t huge on editing but one of the editing techniques he did use was inserted dialogue posters. He did this, so the audience was aware of what happening since the film was silent. Chaplin used a lot of close up shots in his films. This allowed for the audience to see his facial expressions and it created suspense. He was his won person and made films his own way which proved to be successful. The popularity of his pictures allowed him to make enough profit to produce films the way he wanted to. This is what I admire about Chaplin and what drew me to research and write about him. He wasn’t a follower or gave in to conventional types of films. He was a leader and accomplishment more than any other conventional Hollywood filmmaker did. My favorite thing about Chaplin is his comedic act and how he has a way of making everything he does funny. It’s a humor meant for all ages, he makes people burst out laughing just by his facial expressions, a talent that most people can’t do.
