Film Analysis: Julio Cesar Chavez

There is no secret that films in the genre of biopic can often stretch the truth. These types of movies are frequently mere depictions of myth that is loosely based on factual accounts rather than being accurate representations of history. Many ethical dilemmas arise from these circumstances. Among those are the damaging representations that may skew a viewer’s perception of how history may have actually played out. Should filmmakers warn viewers that certain historical details of their forthcoming motion picture have been changed for the purpose of film? What are the editorial ethics when important details pertaining to vital pieces of history are left on the proverbial cutting room floor? The brand new film “Cesar Chavez” does a lot of work to bring about the often untold story of the California migrant farmworkers labor activism and organizing, yet in the process, manages to erase the pertinent contributions of the Filipino who many consider as the pioneers of these movements.
There is much to commend about the inclusion of United Farm Workers (UFW) co-founder and Filipino Larry Itliong in the Hollywood biopic “Cesar Chavez” directed by Diego Luna. However sadly, his depiction is problematic. The film fails to present an accurate history of this historically important farm workers’ movement. “Cesar Chavez” does not stress the historic multi-ethnic partnership between Mexicans and Filipinos in the UFW and the effort that was born as a product the Filipinos’ 1965 Grape Strike. Rather, the film is told from a predominantly Chicano/a perspective that only lightly accents the contribution of Filipino-American farm workers.

...he ‘Cesar Chavez’ film will, with any luck, influence Hollywood to create more movies that reflect our diverse American stories. Filipino Americans are California’s biggest Asian American group, California’s third largest minority group, and the second biggest Asian ethnicity group in the United States of America. Chicanos/as and Filipinos are the two of the fastest rising ethnic collections in the nation. With more documentaries like ‘Delano Manongs, literature, and more ethnic studies discourse set on the promotion of accurate representation of history that bring the experiences of Filipinos in California’s labor movement to light, an opportunity to erase the history of erasure is presenting itself. In sum, it is imperative that a substantial place for Filipino descendants in US history is not buried or elapsed, especially within a popular form of media like film.
