My desire to study Film at university is generated not only from my unconditional love for motion pictures, but also my interest in behind the scenes footage of films which I find so intriguing. The perception of film allows individuals to stretch their imagination and produce surreal worlds that would otherwise never exist and this is expressed in such a universal way. Film does not only depend on the crucial roles such as the director, producer and screenwriter, the audience itself plays a vital part within the film industry and channels the source of success for motion pictures in modern cinema. The camera's amazing ability to capture experiences that otherwise is only seen through the human eye, has always given me a burning desire to study film practically, critically and theoretically. My A level subjects include English combined, Religious Studies and Music, all which I find very inspirational. I am particularly affectionate towards English, as I thoroughly enjoy reading both core texts and my own wider reading. While many motion pictures are originally novels, I feel that the visual account of storytelling strengthens the essence of film. …show more content…

This year in film studies, we studied many directors, such as Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock and others, along with elements of film such as colour, shots and dialogue. Director Orson Welles, who is mostly known for his film Citizen Kane, is commonly known for his films being in non chronological order which creates a riddle for the viewer as they piece together what happens. Orson Welles is also known for his compression of time, which aids in creating the riddle of the story and allows the characters to possibly move on from something, which could in turn, help them develop. Within every history class, English class, and even some science classes, the art of storytelling is a primary foundation for human communication and understanding. Whether it be through myths – Greek, Roman, Egyptian, you pick – or wives tales or even Grandpa telling his old war stories, stories have power. Now, through technological advancements in the last 150+ years (thank you Thomas Edison for your obsession), we have film as a mode to tell stories. Fictional or not, films tell a story; they have the power to give you not only entertainment but enlightenment too. Through continuing advancements, filmmakers have the ability to challenge and manipulate the power of the story through creative resistance; by exploring other elements of storytelling via film, filmmakers can create dramatically different films from similar ideas by using a multitude of techniques. Films are even used to create social commentary.

... time retain one outstanding quality---they are empowering, first in how much power they give to the youth of that time. These are films for them and about them. They reflect their everyday experiences or those they long to have, with the best films knowing exactly what their young audiences want to see on screen and never judging them for it because the mistakes, struggles, and imperfections of young adulthood are timeless too. Second, coming-of-age films also give so much back to young audiences and empower them. These films’ characters have taught audiences what to do, how to feel, and essentially given them the tools by which to navigate the transition from childhood to adulthood and how to make it as painless as possible. As ‘coming-of-age’ changes or stays the same in meaning over time, youth culture, as a genre and subject, will remain a necessity in film.
For Michel Gondry’s film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, I will give an analysis the technology and sound in film and film history by using some research from Monaco’s book in chapter two & four. My analysis of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind reveals the challenges that directors encounter when filming: having to explore the history of past filmmakers in order to prevent making mistakes and having to add touch up special effects to make the film feel more universal and credible for a modern audience.

Other mediums such as still picture and theatrical play also provide the visual and aural elements for the spectator, yet they seem to be inferior to the motion picture in that they lack the reality, affinity, and creativity in terms of use of time and space. The levels of emotions such as attention, memory, imagination, emotion, and unity, which were introduced by Munsterberg, indicates how the spectator perceives the elements of the film and ends up with it.

Many people don’t think about it so much, but movies (or just film in general) have become such a big part of our lives that we don’t think much of it because it just feels like a usual part of living. But have you ever wondered why this is, and how far back film started? Movies and film have been around for a long time, have developed in big ways throughout time, and has advanced in such a big and new way to this day.
Across the globe watching movies started as an asylum for the working class, but slowly the ideas being portrayed onscreen have evolved resulting in movie going to become almost religious. Movies have the ability to leave us in awe as a result of their ability to give us a glimpse of a dream, however unrealistic. I myself am a huge fan of the film industry. I started to feel a certain reverence for it because of the way it inspired me to dream and gave birth to my ambitions. This ultimately led to me to go into an in depth investigation of whether I was the only one who felt this way and what affects had been created because of this feeling.
Movies take us inside the skin of people quite different from ourselves and to places different from our routine surroundings. As humans, we always seek enlargement of our being and wanted to be more than ourselves. Each one of us, by nature, sees the world with a perspective and selectivity different from others. But, we want to see the world through other’s eyes; imagine with other’s imaginations; feel with other’s hearts, at a same time as with our own. Movies offer us a window onto the wider world, broadening our perspective and opening our eyes to new wonders.
To determine whether films can be classed as art first we need to work out what art actually is, The English dictionary defines art as ‘the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.’ If we go by the definition alone then it is easy to see why all films could be considered art as films do apply the creativity and imagination of many different people. However some people argue that traditional definitions do not apply to films in the same way that they would to traditional art forms and that only certain films can be classed as art. Some only class films such as art-house films and avant-garde cinema while others include films that are intended for a wide audience such as Sergio Leones westerns, the pioneering work of Alfred Hitchcock or the stylized films of Quentin Tarantino and the Coen brothers. Others believe that the art/non-art boundary does not exist and all films are art, although some of it is better art.
