In the summer of 1788, France was on the brink of revolution. Thousands were starving and peasant revolts were popping up all over the country. At this time, French government and society was in a period called the “Old Regime,” where mobility between classes was nearly unheard of. A person born into aristocracy was lucky, while one born into poverty would most likely struggle for their entire life. Women’s roles were “strictly defined,” no matter what class they were a part of (Streissguth 6). Before the revolution, most women did not question where their place was: in the home. It was very rare for a woman to work outside the domestic sphere, because they did not have as much freedom as men, even men in the lower class. In relation to this, many of these European women had to immigrate from another country to get to Canada. During this time, Canada’s immigration had closed its doors because its economy was in ruins, there was job loss and many were left homeless. And to enter you would either have to be a farmer, British, or American, but that all changed in 1952, when the government brought in a new immigration act which accepted all races, religions, beliefs and cultures to enter their country. Many women were drawn into the revolution as consumers. Since men were not home they were the main people to maintain the colonial economy. They had furthered rebellions by eagerly participating in boycotts of the 1760s and the 1770s (Oakes, James). Women identified with the goals of the revolution and often led riots against merchants being unfair with what they are selling. Women also decided it was time to point out political ideals. Some pointed out that the right to be taxed should be applied to one’s own representation too (Oakes, James). In the book Of the People, Abagail said, “If ladies are not cared for and paid attention then rebellions will start on their behalf” (Oakes, James). It was not, until 1921, that the Catholic Women’s League, Montreal Local Council of Women and the Fédération National Saint-Jean Baptiste determined to gain Quebec women the right to vote and to disprove the theory that women were unfit for politics.25 Baptiste was able to promote a maternalism movement, meaning the ability to support their arguments with examples of maternity.26 It was also a way to differentiate those who promoted the maternal ideology as a positive aspect of women from the movements striving for equality.27 Although, Baptiste and new women’s committee wanted to change their strategy to support an education campaign, by demonstrating that the right to vote was not to “change their sphere of action in life, but rather to raise and ameliorate social life.”28 In this way, Quebec could see women implicating themselves within society and trying to positively influen...
Women were not treated fairly or equally to men and were supposed to be the perfect stereotype of a lady. They could not be independent all her possessions would either belong to her father or her husband when married. They were supposed to be the caring mother and wife as well not have any say in political issues such as voting. An addition they were paid far less than the men for the same amount of work. With so much injustice taking place the women started to fight back. They form the National council of women of canada and did many things, such as hand out pamphlets, protested, and marched in parades. These actions were not ignored and because of them women now are payed the same as men would as well in 1918 all women could vote.

A huge obstacle that women only in the near past have been able to conquer is their status in society. Women today have the freedom to take up any profession they desire, attend any school they desire, and most importantly marry anyone they desire. In the 16th-18th centuries, the time of the Renaissance, rebirth, and discovery of grand new worlds, women possessed the status of children in many ways; women were considered minors dependent on their fathers until marriage when that dependency transferred to their husbands. They could not own land, they could not be educated, and they most importantly could not marry whom they chose. The poor could possibly marry for love, but the new wealthy merchant class and the nobility married for political reasons: to increase the fortunes of husbands, for women to enter nobility, or vise versa. This reasoning affected every facet of women’s lives. One of the most important women it affected was Queen Elizabeth I. However, it affected her in a less direct way, as she did not have a father arranging a marriage for her.
Attending a liberal arts college is the most opportune way to go. Students will garner an overall better education by receiving a well-rounded education in all subjects, having a smaller student to facility ratio, and lastly having less competition for leadership positions.
