Fidget spinners should be banned in schools because they are a distraction and a toy. It’s more of a distraction than it is about being a stress reliever. The article, “Schools ban fidget toys as classroom distraction” by Kate Thayer states that fidget spinners are being used the wrong way than what they are supposed to. Schools ban them because administration sees that kids use them as a toy and they are a distraction in classes. Kate Ellison, said “Kids are trading them or spinning them instead of writing” (4). As for me, I see kids in school doing the same, playing with them as a toy. Also in the article, a teacher from Queens said “Fidget spinners are being misused by children who don’t know what they’re intended for” (4). Kids use them for calming their anxiety, but it doesn’t help at all. Sarah Young fromm Independet.co said, “To me, it’s common sense. If you give somebody a toy or they could be doing classwork, what’s going to be more interesting?” This was from the article, “Fidget Spinners Do Not Help Those with ADHD, Experts Say”.You can think it out that a child would rather play with a toy than doing class work. Myself, personally would rather play with a toy than doing classwork and some students would rather do so. I see a fidget spinner as a way to get out of class work. Also from “Fidget Spinners Do Not Help Those with ADHD, Experts Say”, Scott Kollins, who works as a clinical psychologist and also professor at Duke University said that “It’s important for parents and teachers who work with kids who have ADHD to know that there are very well studied and documented treatments that work, and they’re out there, so there’s not really quick and easy fixes like buying a toy.” There are better solutions to treat a child’s ADHD than buying a toy. The creator of the fidget spinner, Catherine Hettinger, called the fidget spinner a “spinning toy”
