This festival is celebrated when the Vishaka star falls on the Tamil month of Vaikasi (May-June). Vaikasi Vishaka, the Avatar day of Lord Muruga is celebrated in a grand manner at the temple.

Kandhasashti festival is celebrated for 8 days. The sixth day of Kandasashti is the slaying of Soorapadman, the seventh day of the festival is celebrated as the divine wedding of Muruga and Valli and the eighth day is celebrated as the divine nuptial of Muruga and Deivanai.

Devas pleaded to Lord Muruga to rescue them from the clutches of the Asuras. Lord Muruga became frantic and went on to slay the demons in Thiruporur. After the war Lord Muruga wanted to calm himself down, hence decided to leave to Thiru Thanigai. On his way, he found the beautiful hillock of Kundrathur and decided to rest there for a while. He installed a Linga and worshipped during his stay. He then proceeded to Thiru Thanigai. Since Lord Kandha (Muruga) worshipped Eshwara in the form of a Linga, he is worshipped by the devotees as Kandhazheeswara.
