In brief terms, feminism is the belief in the need to be secure or in the commitment to be secure and defending the rights and opportunities for women equal to those of men. Feminism is needed because all over the world you hear stories of women earning less than what a man does while working, being catcalled, raped, or sexually harassed on the streets from a walk home, or being told they’ll never graduate or amount to anything because of who they are. Most of these stories are proof of how women are treated unfairly in the world. According to ThinkProgress , “The gender wage gap- the fact the average American woman working full time, year round makes 78 percent of what a man will make doing the same- is the result of many factors. Some claim that these factors alone make up for the difference: they say women earn less because they choose lower paying jobs, take breaks from work to care for children, and don’t ask for more money or responsibility.” These claims are stereotypes. These include Marilyn Monroe, The Spice Girls, and Oprah Winfrey. These things don’t happen to big stars only. There are plenty of girls and boys who are shot down around America, no matter if the negativity comes from a coach, teacher, parent, sibling, or partner. For example, Marilyn Monroe had a rough upbringing and was told by modeling agents that she should consider be a secretary instead. Now a day, she’s remembered as a pin-up, model, and actress. Another example is J.K. Rowling; she was nearly penniless, severely depressed, divorced, and trying to raise a child on her own while attending school. She went from depending on welfare to survive to being one of the richest women in the world in only a span of five years by writing a book series that sold out around the world.
