Many of the many things we have read this year show that father-son relationships are a constant factor. Whether or not the son wants to be like the father, the father still shapes the son to be who they grow up to be, and they are one of the biggest pillars in life. In the texts, Antigone, Knock Knock, and the movie The Truman Show, we learn the father is a catalyst that changes his son’s beliefs, perspective, and path. The fathers are absent in two of these works, but still play the same role. In all three works, the son must leave the father behind. The reason why I say he technically only has 1 father is because Trumans “real father” in the show doesn't shape him much, but instead the creator Christof acts like a father figure, highlighting the struggle for authenticity against imposed control. In Knock Knock, the son waits for another game with his father, just for him to be put behind bars. He grows up feeling a void of absence from his father leaving, and he misses the fundamentals of growing up with a father figure, still never getting his father knocked. Meanwhile, Creon's authoritative stance over his son Haemon shapes Haemon into not being afraid to take part with his love Antigone, and not his father, defying the social norms, and underscores the conflict between family loyalty and civic duty. Father-son relationships are pivotal not only in shaping individual identities and acting as pillars in one's life, but also in influencing broader societal norms and values.
