In 1941, the Holocaust started when Hitler started to punish the people who did not fit into the Arian race. The Holocaust was an organized, bureaucratic, state-sponsored persecution. The Nazi Party and its collaborators murdered approximately 11-17 million people during this time. In the memoir Night by Eliezer Wiesel, it recounts Elie's experiences as a young Jewish boy during World War II, specifically his time in concentration camps, including Auschwitz and Buchenwald. Throughout the book, Wiesel describes the horrors he witnessed and the challenges he faced as he struggled to survive in the face of unimaginable cruelty and suffering. After everything that the prisoners have been through, their love for each other is still strong. In this part of the memoir, the SS officers force the prisoners to run from one camp or another. The SS officers in the camp tell Elie and the people in the infirmary that they will be left behind and cannot go on the death run. Elie and the other prisoners in the infirmary are told they are being left behind and cannot come on the death march because they are too weak. Elie realizes that his hurt foot might prevent him from being able to run. Elie must make a tough decision on whether he will go on the death march with his father or stay back and die.
