Throughout each decade particular lifestyles have influenced the styles of fashion in many different aspects. History throughout each decade being a period of 10 years, has had certain lifestyles, referring to the way of life and the way an individual lives and these lifestyles throughout these years have influenced the fashion, fashion being a trend of either clothing, personal appearance and behaviour. Many life events or Historical events from the years 1960 to 2000’s have had reactions from the fashion industry; certain decades in particular lifestyles had either rebellion or a positive reaction. In 1960 there was a rebellion from young adults as well as women which influenced the fashion of that decade, in which fashion was similar to the 1970s fashion however 1970 was known as the disco age. Whereas the 1980 was a decade of entertainment in all forms which influenced mostly teenagers in their style of fashion. However the 1980s entertainment impact on teenagers carried on in the 1990 and 2000s although fashion focused more on the impact of music rather than all forms of entertainment, these decades were eras of grunge music and heavy metal. Therefore fashion became and becomes the portrayal of the lifestyle in a particular period of time or history.
Fashion is everything to society and the media. The fashion industry has transformed into a necessity in the life of people. Everyone wants to look good, feel fabulous and feel as if we belong with everyone else. The envy and desire to wear certain things and look a certain way all come, from wearing the latest fashion handbags, accessories, dresses, shoes, and the list goes on. But, when is considering fashion into an individual’s life going too far to the extreme? Many do not consider the whereabouts of fashion materials and how the environment is affected by the mere existence of certain garments. Some may believe these objects grow on trees. The fashion industry as a whole, has been notorious from green issues caused by their lack of sensitivity to the environment, conspicuous and unnecessary consumption of materials, encouraging an “throw-away” society and image issues that support women and young adults to look a certain way to feel “beautiful.” This is an issue that has increased over the past decades. Not just women, but men also feel the uncontrollable need to do whatever it takes to look like the celebrities they see on television and on the runways. The thought that the materials to make those desired items may have caused the life of animals or the destruction of mother nature does not come into mind. The future of women’s fashion is uncertain—in that shock value is harder to come by with each passing year. There is a concept in fashion that nothing is new, everything has been done before. This theory is coming closer to obvious reality, as fashion shows of recent years have visual throwbacks as late as the Victorian era. People may say that the true years of fashion began in the late nineteen forties and went on through the early nineteen sixties. If you look at fashion today, its almost repeated the look from sixty years ago. In each generation fashion trends become based on history and/or important events. in the nineteen forties fashion was being modeled by the military wear. World War II caused a drastic change in the way clothes were being made and worn. In the nineteen fifties Americans admired the fashion of movie stars and music artists. They lose their own identities because they are not keeping up with their appearances to satisfy themselves. Author Hemphill, stated in an article that, “Consumers have a taste for trends—that is, for goods that enable them to move in step with other people (Hemphill 9).” Essentially, what Hemphill is stating is that people are now making choices on what they want to wear based on what celebrities and popular people wear. Peoples choices are not their own, their choices of attire are based on the styles of trendsetters. The motivation for the styles and trends today are often influenced by celebrities and the media. Every outfit put together by an individual is based off of an original idea of someone before them. This could be considered an imitation instead of a new creation. People are often using fashion to shape identities, to gain social status, and to build their confidence.
