"It’s a question that’s been asked since the dawn of time: who do women dress for?"
At first it was men, and now it’s the media.

A strong, dominating industry that controls the public sphere is fashion. For a centuries fashion was the be-all and end-all of society, fashion designers controlled the trends, whilst models controlled who wore them; and yet with the addition of social media, now the fashion industry is being controlled too. Fashion is known to be one of the 7 most influenced industries by social media. (Carranza, A. 2015). In times without social media, fashion focused on runways, celebrities and public appearances. Although, it has always held a global reach; with the addition of social media,
The transition of technology from generalised media to social media has been vitally important to those businesses within the fashion and beauty industries. (Cassidy, E. (2018)). Technology is continuously evolving, starting with when the internet was first developed and now with the introduction of Web 2.0. (Cassidy, E. (2018)). Industries such as the fashion industry has had to adjust itself to meet the needs of the new emerging world. “Web 2.0 is the term given to describe a second generation of the World Wide Web that is focused on the ability for people to collaborate and share information online.” (Beal, V. (2018)). Web 2.0 is known for its social nature with the introduction of social media, thus making it the most influential concept to the fashion industry. (Fateh, A.
(Cassidy, E. (2018)). This is evident through the integration process of social media into branding and advertisement schemes. One example of this is Hi Smile; rather than producing a successful TV advertisement campaign like Nike (Just Do It), Hi Smile incorporated Instagram influencers in their marketing campaign. “A Social Media Influencer is a user on social media who has established credibility in a specific industry. A social media influencer has access to a large audience and can persuade others by virtue of their authenticity and reach.” (Pixlee Resources. (n.d)). This was a successful move for Hi Smile and resulted in increased sales and interest, hence why the brand grew from $20,000 to $40million. (The Entourage Resources. (2018)). Thus, proving that social media marketing, targeted to a specific audience can be successful, and compared to the older marketing strategies it can be said that social media has changed the fashion industry for the better. (Gilliland, N.
In the article, “The Fashion Industry: Free to Be an Individual” by Hanna Berry, Berry discusses how for decades women have been told to use certain products and that if they used those products they would be beautiful. Women over the years have believed this idea and would purchase items that promised to make them prettier, thinner, smarter and even more loved. However, in reality it was never what they wore on their bodies that helped them be any of those things; but what it did help with was to empower women to become fearless and bold by what they chose to wear on their bodies as a form of expression.
The most obvious prospect is that the “Sociological Imagination” which is released by the sociologist C. Wright Mills (2010). “Sociological Imagination” is an idea that connects the everyday life with the social network deeply. In other words, plenty of social issues are not only caused by individuals but also associated with the whole social structure and patterns. In this essay, the theory of Mills would be applied to display two different aspects that how fast fashion becomes a social issue. Firstly, fast fashion provides a great deal of job opportunities in developing countries and which leads to the awareness of workers’ rights in these countries.
In recent years, the realms of marketing and public relations have changed. Branding has become an increasingly important tool for businesses. As described in Kleppner’s Advertising Procedure, attributes of a successful brand include recognition, differentiation, imagery, and the ability to link all brand communications to that brand (Lane, King, Russell, & Kleppner, 2005 p. 639). In 2016, branding also means having a strong presence on social media. Lisa Ostrowercha describes social media as another way “… for your brand to share its personality with the masses” (Ostrowercha, 2016).
We can also have just as much presence as most startups and mid-size companies and products. Social media tools have leveled the playing ground and enabled us to reach incredible heights, at the cost of our time. Some researchers indicate that one can decide what face to show to the world, while positioning self for success through the personal branding
