When Farinata refers to the two times when he had to drive the Guelphs out of Florence. He says “I had to scatter them not once, but twice” When Farinta uses the word “Scatter” he means that he made them made them separate because if they met in one place they could plan to attack him because of what he did to them. Also he makes the news spread everywhere about their story, especially the people who deal with him and that if they saw the Guelphs together in one place they should tell him immediately. He is proud of himself because he did something no one has done it before forcing people to leave everything that they have behind them he not only did it once, but twice. Also because he was the leader of the Ghibellines and always the leaders

Sulla’s earlier career had not been that of an orthodox Optimate. Though he belonged to an old patrician family, it had long slid into obscurity and poverty. Plutarch suggests that a legacy from his step-mother and another from a mistress helped him, somewhat late, to a public career (Plutarch, p. 327). Plutarch was a Greek historian who wrote more than a century after Sulla’s death. Some of his pieces are polemical, that is, his writings possibly arise from scurrilous tracts, written by political adversaries of his subjects. As Marius’ quaestor, he had captured Jugurtha and won the loyalty of his fellow soldiers, sparking a later brutal animosity between the pair. This talent for winning the loyalty of soldiers never deserted Sulla, and that fact would have terrible consequences for Rome (Williams, p.139).
When Antonio first became homeless, an older man tried to steal one of his belongings, which was a simple hot plate. His first instinct was to attack the man and take back his property. While doing so, Antonio thought, “We have almost nothing, and this man wants to take it from us” (43). In addition, he mentions how, “It felt good to hit this man… For a moment, he felt strong and free; fury was a much better drug than self-pity.” (43). When Antonio discusses about the old man and his crimes, he may be alluding to Longoria and what he did to Antonio’s family. The man who tried to take away part of Antonio’s possessions is referring to Longoria and how he took away Antonio’s family. The act of beating the old man refers Antonio’s eventual act of revenge against Longoria and the satisfaction he experiences afterwards. Both acts demonstrate Antonio’s willingness to sacrifice and harm other in certain scenarios where it is necessary. The significant difference between Longoria and Antonio is the intention behind their actions. Longoria killed hundreds in cold blood for his own selfish desires and beliefs, while Antonio only harmed a total of two people to get revenge and to enforce justice in the only way he could. As mentioned before, Longoria’s actions are evil because he commits them for selfish reasons and without remorse. In contrast, Antonio’s actions are seen as necessary evils. A necessary evil is defined as an act of evil (as perceived by society) that is committed in a certain scenario where it follows a utilitarian approach; an approach in which the action does more good than harm. When Antonio beat up the old man, he was merely protecting his belongings and enforcing the law. More importantly, when Antonio killed Longoria, it was for his wife, his son, and the hundreds of other innocent lives that Longoria had claimed; Antonio did an act of
These changes could be felt long after the death of the Gracchi, which is evident in the powerful political armies of Marius and Sulla. In conclusion, The Gracchi were significant figures in Roman history for the short and long term consequences that resulted from their actions, acting as perceptive idealistic men who were concerned for the greater good of Rome at a time when it was atypical to do so. Despite the mostly laudatory writing in Agricola, Tacitus began the book on a melancholy tone. He expressed anger over what he considered autocratic ruling of Rome, suggesting that it was a terrible political fault. “An outstanding personality can still triumph over that blind antipathy to virtue which is a defect of all states, small and great alike.” (p.51) Tacitus expressed the idea that any state would carelessly disregard the virtues it once held as important, and by implication of the context he wrote in, find itself in a state of degradation similar to Rome’s at the time. He was not exclusively negative in that statement, however. His believed that one highly virtuous person could in fact successfully counteract a state’s decline. Agricola, he revealed throughout the book, was a paradigm for that person.

To Kill a Mockingbird, the novel by Harper Lee embodies a work of Southern literature, set in the 1930s in a small town in Alabama. The book’s genre exemplifies a coming-of-age historical fiction story. The narrator, a young girl named Scout Finch, describes the lessons she and her brother Jem learn when their father, a lawyer named Atticus, defends an African American man who stands accused of raping a white woman. The novel’s premise revolves around the efforts of a father raising his children and guiding them in their moral development. Along the way, the book deals with the themes of courage, prejudice and maturity. These three concepts are defined differently by Atticus than by most of the other people in the town where he lives. According to Atticus, courage means doing what remains as right and resisting what remains as wrong, even if other people oppose you. In contrast to the prejudice of the townspeople, Atticus believes it important to treat everyone equally. Maturity, in Atticus’ view, refers to having a sense of conscience and seeking to protect those who remain innocent. As these definitions show, Atticus Finch displays a strong sense of ethics. His goal as a parent remains to pass his values on to his children. This paper will argue that Scout and Jem learn the true meanings of courage, prejudice and maturity through the influence of their father and the example he sets for them.
The symbolism and imagery used in the short stories paints a vivid picture into the author’s train of thought. Charlotte Perkins Gilman and Shirley Jackson were not normal writers. DuPont had been overlooking the effects of C8 to its workers and the inhabitants in that region. Despite all the concerns raised by both its workers and inhabitants no action was taken. Many had been affected health wise and even economically. Women who were directly exposed to the chemical also stood a risk of giving birth to children who were deformed and had health issues. Workers were mostly affected by asthma, intense diarrhea and bleeding. Despite all this, if DuPont had used the Pentad approach they could have created a more systematic change, this change could have assisted in coming up with ways to dispose of the chemicals in addition to creating safety measures for their workers when handling this chemical. The use of Pentad could have been very helpful, for instance, it could have allowed them to focus on how they could have managed the effects of this chemical both by the company and the surrounding neighbors.
The film “La Ciociara” is a wartime portrayal of citizens in Italy. “La Ciociara” begins with the two women, Rosetta and her mother, Cerisa, who are in the city of Rome when a bomb goes off. The historical context of the bomb is the Allied bombing of Rome during World War II. During World War II, Italy joins Germany part of the Axis powers to fight against the Allies. In the reading by Merriman on WWII, we learn that, “Benito Mussolini had already signed a pact with Hitler on October 1936 forming what the Italian dictator called an ‘Axis’” (Merriman, 1050). This pact would soon serve importance between the two sides that formed during the global war that spread on an “unprecedented scale” (Merriman, 1065). The film takes place while Europe is an uncontrolable battleground of WWII. At the beginning of the film, Rosetta is scared because of the violence of war and she she is cries in her mother's arms. Subsequently, Cerisa declares that they will leave Rome to seek safety. Cerisa has her friend watch their house while she escapes Rome to find shelter
