Far North Essay Far North by Will Hobbs, published in 1996, is a book of adventure and suspense. A 15 year old boy named Gabe is on a plane in Canada with his peers to do some sight seeing. Unexpectedly, following some poor decisions, the plane crashes in the cold Canadian Northwest Territories . Gabe and the other two survivors need to do everything in their power to survive the harsh winter. Gabe is a brave and strong kid who has to face many trials and hardships to survive in his hero's journey. Throughout the story, he is called to adventure, meets a mentor, and faces trials along the way. Firstly Gabe is called to adventure. An example of this is when his plane crashes in the river. This is his call to adventure because it puts him in the middle of the unknown, with no way to get back to civilization. It also puts him in the middle of the challenges that he will soon face. Another example of how Gabe is called to adventure is when he first accepts the sight seeing invite from Clint. Gabe-“I got a call from Clint. He said to meet him at the floatplane dock first thing in the morning if I wanted to do some sightseeing.”(pg 22-23). If Gabe would have not gotten this call from Clint …show more content…
The first example of this is when Johnny led Gabe after the plane went down the falls. After the first night Johnny starts a fire to send a signal to nearby planes.”In the morning Johnny Raven built a larger fire outside of the bush teepee”(pg 64). By doing this he shows the boys that they have to work hard if they want to get back to civilization. The second example of Johnny being a good mentor for Gabe is when he got the moose. “Moose”, Johnny said. Putting his hands closer and closer together as to suggest it was a small mose (pg 76). If Johnny did not get that moose it would have made it extremely hard to survive, even more so than it already was. This also gave the them hope to survive and make it out of the
At the beginning of the novel, Johnny Tremain, Johnny was very proud. Proverbs 8:13 says, “When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.” In the story, the proud youth slowly learned this lesson. In the opening, Johnny refused to be friends with the other apprentices, Dove and Dusty. He felt as if he was too good for them although he knew he could easily become their friends, for it says on page five that, “He knew his power and reveled in it. He could have easily made friends with Dove, for Dove was lonely and admired Johnny as well as envied him. Johnny preferred to bully him.” Dove was fed-up with Johnny’s boastful attitude, so when Johnny was constructing a sugar basin and asked Dove to get him a crucible, Dove gave him a cracked one...
Hatchet by Gary Paulson is a fiction novel about a thirteen-year-old boy named Brian that survives a plane crash after the pilot dies of a heart attack and Brian is forced to land the plane himself, and in doing so, lands in a lake around the setting of a Canadian forest. Throughout the duration of the novel, Brian is to survive this dangerous situation with nothing except for a literal hatchet that was gifted to him by his mother prior to getting on the plane to go visit his father in the Canadian North Woods as his parents are newly separated after a recent divorce. Gary Paulsen was inspired to write Hatchet from his own life and personal experiences as both of his parents gave him a hard time growing up through their rocky marriage and unstable parenting as well as the fact that he grew up in the country and had to provide for himself. Hatchet also received a 1988 Newbery Honor award for its excellency. The fiction book is a piece of his life and it’s struggles as he wrote it to convey the following opinions: positivity can get you far no matter what the situation at hand may be, man can

He could do tasks even though he was a cripple. He finally had a job that he could do without one hand which also made him feel independent. Another event that transformed Johnny's life was the revolutionary war and the events leading up to it. For example, the Boston tea party affected Johnny and his transformation greatly. That was Johnny's first real time to see what could happen.
This book Into The Wild is about how a young man wants to get away from the world. He does escape from society, but ends up dying in the process. The author, Jon Krakauer, does a great job of describing Chris McCandless and his faults. Chris is an intelligent college graduate. He went on a two-year road trip and ended up in Alaska. He didn't have any contact with his parents in all of that time. Krakauer does a great job of interviewing everyone who had anything to do with McCandless from his parents, when he grew up, to the people who found his body in Alaska.
Readers are impressed and inspired by Junior’s courage, determination and passion. Heroes inspire people because of their actions more so than directly saving someone. Courage and passion that creates determination are heroic because they inspire other people to do that themselves. Junior is even more heroic, because, besides
The first part of the hero’s journey is the call to adventure. This is the voyage that the hero is asked to go on in order to accomplish greater good for human kind. This is the hero’s chance to help his or her community, family or friends by embarking on a long journey and challenging his, or herself. Gilgamesh does not go on a journey to help others, he goes to make himself look better. “ I have not established my name stamped on bricks as my destiny decreed, therefore I will go to the country where the cedar is felled” (page 70). This passage shows that the only reason that Gilgamesh wants to go on a journey is for fame and popularity.
Leo Buscaglia, a motivational speaker and American author, once stated, “Life is uncharted territory. It reveals its story one moment at a time” (thinkexist.com). The quotation reveals that anyone can have an adventure because life is an adventure. Homer’s the Odyssey and Miguel de Cervantes’s Don Quixote tell the stories of Odysseus and Don Quixote. The two men’s lives are full of adventure, but they are two completely different adventures. Odysseus continually fights for his life, whereas Don Quixote simply fights for chivalry. Odysseus and Don Quixote are different adventure heroes because of the reasons for their adventures, their accomplishments, and their bravery.
Johnny Cade was a former criminal that was wanted for allegedly murdering a young teen named Bob Sheldon. Since this time of events, Johnny’s image soon turned. From a criminal to a hero that is. Before Johnny died from his severe burns and broken back he gave Ponyboy a book, Gone With The Wind, he found a note from Ponyboy saying “stay gold”. Ponyboy’s friendship with Johnny is so strong that he is persuaded to write an English assignment about his experiences. Johnny mentions that saving the children was worth sacrificing his own life. Johnny thinks sacrificing his life for the children is worth his life, because they still have their whole life to live and Johnny was going to get arrested if he would have lived. Johnny wants Ponyboy to do better for himself, and he believes he can achieve anything because he is strong.
The classic novel Of Mice and Men written by John Steinbeck has resonated with readers for generations. Steinbeck’s poignant use of literary elements highlight the negative aspects of the human condition. His use of foreshadowing, imagery, and symbolism assist in outlining these issues.
The first reason Johnny should trust dove is because of the adventures he will go on. Although Johnny only has one functioning hand he gets recruited by the Sons of Liberty and is provided the opportunity to aid them. While being a part of the Sons of Liberty Johnny is granted the perfect circumstances, allowing him to be involved in the Boston Tea party. Eventually he is also given the privilege joining the military and is able for his country in the
One well-known example of “The Hero’s Journey” from popular culture is the Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, by J.K. Rowling. In the novel, Harry Potter, the main character, is the chosen one and “The Hero’s Journey” applies to his life from the moment he is attacked by He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named as a baby. Joseph Campbell calls the initial phase of a hero’s development the “Call to Adventure.” The call is the in... ...
Tuttle dug into a ragged box, pulled out an Army issue compass, counted “68”, and put it on the desk. “I hate doing inventory, hung above”, he said. Tuttle was the most junior Soldier in the supply section, that along with his poor attitude led to his having to count just about everything the unit owned. Tuttle droned on, “It takes so long and the Captain just signs what we put in front of him.” Clark rolled his eyes “First of all, the only thing you know about the Captain is what he looks like and second of all,”…Clark pointed to a plaque hung above the door for all to see and read it forebodingly. “The trust between Supply and Leadership runs deep if lost, it is nearly impossible to restore.” Clark picked up Compass “68” then
