Journey In Will Hobbs's Far North

Far North was a great adventure, but it wasn’t some tom sawyer easy peasy journey. “Far North” by Will Hobbs published in 1996. It is about two teenagers who go to a boarding school together and another elder. They go on a plane ride and stop and the plane stops working while in the middle of the wilderness. During the novel “ Far north Gabe is the hero and goes through lots of challenges. There are three main parts of the hero’s journey he goes through. Meeting/ working with a mentor, goes through trials, and experiences death in different ways. At the beginning of the book gabe “Meets the Mentor” but doesn’t really know he is the mentor until they get stuck in the forest. But Johnny raven is the Mentor and helps Gabe and Raven along the journey. …show more content…

But there are three main times he really ran into some deep issues. “ We knew in an instant what this meant for us, and at the same time could hardly begin to imagine the enormity of our loss.” Pg. 119. What that quote represents is that Johnny Raven just died and the boys realized that their chance of survive plummeted. This was one of the biggest trials in the book because for all Johnny was their mentor and “Guide”. He helped them survive and without him they were doomed. On Pg. 181 Raymond falls out of the tree and gets hurt. “ Even through his red mask I could see him react to the pain. “I hurt it”, he whispered apologetically. “I think I hurt it bad.” What’s going on in the quote is that Raymond got hurt very bad and can’t even put any pressure on his leg. WHat this means is that Gabe will have to do all of the work for now on. This was a huge trouble on the journey and Gabe almost couldn't overcome it. “ Fast as a train, the bear charged. I got set to try to do some damage…. The bear came to an abrupt stop” Said Gabe on Pg. 187. During this quote the bear was going to attack Gabe. This is a problem, Gabe wanted to run but remembered that it would chase after him like no other and kill him. He decided to believe in himself and talk to the bear and it ended up saving him. During this quote it shows how clint dies, but moments before this. He handed Gabe and Raymond the essentials they needed to survive. After he died it really scared Gabe “ It felt as if every nerve in my body had just been cut with a knife” Even though Clint pretty much saved the group's life he really opened the boy's eyes about how dangerous the forest is. On Pg. 119 Johnny Raven dies “It looked like he’d never had time to try to get up. “Heart Attack?”” What this quote is explaining is Johnny Raven’s death. They don’t know the “official” reason of his death but they know he fell down and couldn’t get back up. After it happened they both started crying because they knew what this meant for their chances of their survival. Like I explained before. On Pg.187 Gabe stared down the winter bear and had an out of body experience. What happened in this part of the book is Gabe encountered by the “Winter Bear”. Which was just a huge grizzly bear that was covered in ice and looks grey. It didn’t eat enough to go in hibernation so it is looking for food. The bear then charged at Gabe and then Gabe had a out of body experience where he was remembering what Raymond had told him which was to stay calm and not run. Which ended up working.
