Fantasy is a word most people are very familiar with. It is seen about every day through video games and movies. According to the Merriam-Webster, fantasy is, “something that is produced by the imagination.” Children grow up on fantasy. It is seen through the movies they watch and the video games they play. It is also common for a child to create another person with the use of their imaginations. Fantasy movies and games have both positive and negative effects on children. Although some fantasy movies do help with things such as eye sight and multitasking, there are many negative effects. Some of those effects are desensitization to violence and emotional attachment to the games or movies. First of all, most people who are not involved with …show more content…
This is extremely bad when children spend most of their free time being entertained by them. Children watch things such as cartoons or fantasy movies that contain violence or fighting scenes. Without knowing, they are becoming used to the images being shown. So the next time they see the same scene they become unfazed by it. This is the same with violent fantasy video games. With concern levels rising, there have been many psychologists doing their own research on the topic. Social psychologist, Brad Bushman at Ohio State University, started his experiments by showing a group filled with children and adolescents, violent pictures. One of the pictures he showed them was of a man shoving a gun down another man’s throat. While the second picture was of a man holding a knife to a woman’s throat. Bushman says, “What we found is for people who were exposed to a lot of violent video games, their brains did not respond to violent images.” In other words, Bushman described them as “numb.” Nicholas Carnagey, who was an Iowa State University psychology instructor collaborated with Bushman. Carnagey found that, "The results demonstrate that playing violent video games, even for just 20 minutes, can cause people to become less physiologically aroused by real violence.” He also discovered that, "Participants randomly assigned to play a violent video game had relatively lower heart rates and galvanic skin …show more content…
Without some restraint in fantasy games, the player may begin to ignore reality. Why would they want reality when they have whatever they desire in their world of fantasy? In today’s society, a major thing people lack is control. For many things, people cannot control the outcome. This is especially true in the lives of children. They cannot control injuries, or even their parent’s financial stability. With that in mind for anyone, fantasy games allow an escape from reality. This may allow them a chance to forget that they are being bullied in school or that their parents are about to get a divorce. The fantasy video games forces their attention to be on the tasks within the game instead of the difficulties of their current reality. Imagination can be a powerful thing. In the end, it is all an illusion. Some people know that from the beginning. However, there are some people who tend to forget. This causes them to lose track in the difference between reality and fantasy. The same thing happens in fantasy movies. In Media and Children’s Aggression, Fear, and Altruism, Barbra J. Wilson mentions that, “In one nationally representative survey, 62 percent of parents of two- to seventeen-year-olds agreed that their children had “sometimes become scared that something they saw in a movie or on TV might happen to them.” According to The Association for Natural Psychology, “If a
Has anyone ever thought about the people who produce video games and television shows? In all fairness, those who have made these forms of entertainment have far greater imaginations than those who disapprove of their purpose. Producers have indeed captured the minds of America’s youth and allowed children to exercise their imaginations in fantasy worlds. They do not intend to deprive children of their personal imaginations, but the intention is to expand their minds beyond what they see everyday, and beyond the common feelings they encounter in life by making them into something abnormal to the world even though what children believe is not and may never be real.
The allegation that videogames cause violent behavior in children has been present as long as videogames themselves. Some researchers said that the Sandy Hook shooter, Adam Lanza, was one intense gamer. “Seung-Hui Cho, the Virginia Tech Shooter was seen by his roomates as odd because he never joined them in video games.”(Beresin) This debate will continue to go on in this country as long as there are horrific crimes that occur. There is much written in the research regarding this issue, and many differing views. The research that is presented in the next few paragraphs supports the theory that it is not the graphic video games that produce aggressive behavior, but other factors in a child’s life that create violent actions.
The more kills, wounds, hit & runs or attacks the player accomplishes in the game the higher the score and more reward. This action is consistent in most games with a high violent content. Research studies have shown that the exposure of violence in video games does not “turn off” because the game is turned off, but rather the violent behavior displayed in the video game then reenacts and manifests itself in the behavior of the child (Anderson & Dill, 2000; Ballad & West, 1996; Bushman & Anderson, 2002). In study presented by Professor Jeanne Funk in 2004 review 150 fourth and fifth graders and how violent video games lowered the amounts of empathy, a person’s ability to understand another’s feelings, in the player.
Most of the time violence is considered as the worst when it comes to the bad effects of video games. A scientific survey (Anderson & Bushman, 2001) has found a connection between aggressive behaviors and playing violent games where more the children play violent games, more tend be aggressive in behavior. Not only that but also they are more likely to have aggressive feelings and thoughts plus diminished aiding. It is said that the impact of playing violent games in children is compounded by the intuitive/interactive nature of the games. Children are remunerated for being more vicious or violent, most of the time in many games. The demonstration of violence is carried out over and again and the player is in control of the violence who encounters the brutality such as killing/stabbing in his own eyes. This first-hand experience in violence, being rewarded for it and the iteration of this process are compelling conditions for learning and developing violent behavior.
At this day in age we bask in the luxury of having easy access to advanced technology at our disposal. From the World Wide Web, to cell phones, music, movies and video games the human race has thought of any and everything to keep us entertained. Over the years studies have shown reasonable concerns regarding the long-term effects of video games. These games can desensitize gamers to real life violence, which is usually seen in the younger crowd. The studies especially hit on the games containing player-on-player violence. Though these games are extremely entertaining and can get kids to settle down for a while, if not properly supervised, they can produce adverse effects. Other studies have shown that video games can be used as way to yield positive outcomes such as, good problem solving skills, cooperation in a group and the ability to flow. Although there has been psychological research on children learning through the actions of others some believe that children are automatically able to distinguish between what is just a game and what is reality. The longer they are allowed on their game system the more they become convinced that their games are real. Some researchers believe violent video games can channel the aggression of the child but the parents are to blame for what happens to the child after playing an excessive amount over a period of time. Children can become preoccupied with these violent video games which have been proven to be the cause of poor social skills, uncontrollable aggression and a false reality.
First of all it is important to specify what exactly children are being exposed to when playing these games. There are several controversial topics inside of mature rated video games, most notably being violence and gore. According to the Entertainment Software Rating Board, or the ESRB, there are over eighteen thousand video games featuring violence and gore, several of which feature realistic looking human characters fighting and even killing other human characters. Another controversial topic in video games is the harsh language. The ESRB notes that an astounding twenty-eight thousand video games have language that someone could find offensive. Many children are younger than ten when they begin to play video games and being exposed to offensive language could start the child to using similar inappropriate language. Approximately the same number of video games have drug or alcohol abuse. In the majority of games containing drugs or alcohol a character will use them with little to no consequence, being completely unrealistic possibly making a child believe they could use the same d...
Video games are widely popular as a form of entertainment for young children and teenagers in the United States, and many of these games contain forms of violence. Because this causes exposure to such graphic images for many children, there has been a concern that these violent forms of entertainment affect these children. Numerous studies conducted by groups of psychologists have been directed on this particular issue, leading to evidence both for and against this claim. This is an issue which parents should acknowledge, as it greatly impacts their children. Therefore, parents must become aware of the issue of violence in video games and monitor their children’s access to such games because history as well as numerous studies and statistics to have shown that they have negative effects on children, causing desensitization due to the exposure to such intense images.
When one hears the word video games what is normally thought of? “Donkey Kong” possibly, or maybe the newer games like “Call of Duty” (COD) or “Halo” and “Grand Theft Auto” (GTA). Either way video games have gone though many advancements over the years. Since back in the 80’s when arcade games and games like “Donkey Kong” were around games could only go linearly up and down or left and right. For insistence in “Super Mario” the character could not move backwards only forwards and up and down (jumping). Now when looking back to those old, classic games they seem cheap, glossy and even not appealing to the new gamers of the current generation. This is because of the new development in games, such as, “Lara Croft Tomb Raider” where the graphics, sounds, vibrations from the controller makes the game so realistic. It’s almost as if those playing are in the game and are experiencing what ever it is the main character is going through. These games however fun and realistic they are, seem have a bad side affect to the youth. Games like GTA can affect the upbringing of young children who play even though they are not yet at a development stage to handle the level of violence in the game. There have been cases where children have reenacted the games, and many children who play start to think that the violence is okay.
video games often warp their sense of reality. The kids think that if they shoot a person in a game and nothing really happens then nothing will really happen if they shoot a person in real life. When video games first became popular, people may not have seen this as much of a problem because games were not very realistic. With the advancement of technology, however, video games are becoming more and more realistic. If video games become more realistic, children will forget what is real and what is simulated; a child seeing somebody violently murder another human being in a video game will have the same effects as seeing somebody murder another human being in real life. Witnessing these brutal acts of violence either will traumatize or desensitize them to violence. However, this is contradictory to the “Play is labile” theory (Schroeder 4), which will be discussed, in further detail.
In the article “Violent video game have lower effects on highly exposed teens” by Lippincott Williams and Wilkins it states an experiment of low and high experience group of teens, that played violent and non-violent video games. The results were that the group of low experience had lower sleep after playing the violent video games and the group of high experience there was no difference in sleep after playing the two games (par 6). Children have a lack of sleep after being exposed to strong violence. Traumatization occurs in children, leading to poor sleep after witnessing horrifying murders, the amount of blood, and the pain that characters go through. Also, violent video game makes an effect in children heart rate. In the book of “Impulse Control Disorder” edited by Elias Aboujaoude and Lorrin M. Koran stated, “individuals who previously played violent video games and saw real violence it resulted that the individuals had lower heart rates and decreased of galvanic skin response” (185). Children feel anxiety when seeing these types of violent actions that is in the video games. The situations that occur in the video games can happen in reality, that is where anxiety is created to children. Children are more easily to be scared of things that can take away their lives, therefore violent video games show them homicides leading them to have an effect on their health. Minors
The question is, “Do violent video games influence children to act aggressively?” and “Can repetitive killing train a person to be violent himself?” Although the violence in these video games is fictional, research has proven the violence to lead to more aggressive behavior in children. Violent acts depicted in these games allow young children to believe that killing and fighting is acceptable and fun.
“Some children may become more aggressive as a result of watching and playing violent video games” (Violent). From the video games the children wants to try new things they learn from it. The children will think it's cool to act like the things they see in the video games. Kids will also be irritated cause of the video games they play and they will act aggressively to others. Children will also try to play aggressively with their friends. They will call their friends names for not being able to take t...
Video games that include violence have become recognized by numerous people and have been linked to the violence that occurs in the real world. Some people believe this statement to be true, but others find a lack of evidence to support these accusations. Not only has video games affected our outlook on violence, but also affected the way children behave. Researchers believe that the increase in aggressive behavior in children has to do with the violent games they play. While some researchers have this ideology that is backed up with their research, others believe it does the opposite. Scientists have become aware that if gamers play action games, their cognitive skills improve. With having more than half of the American population playing video games, multiple movies have become based off video games as a way to attract this audience and increase the popularity of movie industries. Thus, society will continue to be influenced by video games because it has become part of our lifestyle and with the advancement in technology, the influence will only become
