Investigating the Effects of Media On Children
“As policymakers - and as parents - we have a responsibility to examine the effects of media on our children, a responsibility this legislation can better enable us to fulfill. No one is looking out, in a systematic way, for cumulative impact of today's newer electronic media on our children.”, states Joseph Lieberman, former United States Senator. This quote portrays the effect of media on children accurately. Media has a immense outcome of how kids portray the world, and what they learn. Current media research has shown that exposure to media, especially on young children, may lead to a decline in social skills, a decline in academic capabilities, and an increase in child obesity.
Media has a huge impact on a child’s social skills. Television, for example, plays a large role in a child’s life, teaching them how to act, and showing them prosocial and antisocial behaviors, Barbara J. Wilson, Author of “Media and Children's Aggression, Fear, and Altruism” maintains that:
“So much public attention has been paid to potential negative effects of the media on children that parents and researchers alike have scarcely acknowledged the positive. Yet if television and movies can teach children antisocial behaviors such as aggression, then it makes sense that these same media can teach beneficial behaviors as well. The challenge is to differentiate the media messages that are potentially harmful from those that are positive or prosocial in nature.”

Moreover, media as a whole has a huge effect on children. Media is an influential source in a young child’s life, they learn from different types of media, they take what they see for example on TV, and that becomes how they view the world. Furthermore, children learn how to act from media they learn social skills whether it is negative or positive, they also achieve their academic approaches from various technology means, and may become obese if they are influenced too much. Media has an enormous part of a young child’s life, it teaches them many lessons and contributes to them as a whole.
In “Television Harms Children”, Ann Vorisek White claims that the intellectual and cognitive development of children who frequently watch television is threatened. To support this claim, she points to the findings that “the more television children watch, the weaker their language skills and imaginations” (White, 2006). Before the brain fully matures around age 12, it is in the stage of rapid development. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) “recommends that children under the age of two not watch TV or videos, and that older children watch only one to two hours per day of nonviolent, educational TV” (White, 2006). A study from the AAP (as cited in White, 2006) found that the average American child watches four hours of television every day. Considering "expression and reasoning are not automatic" abilities, young children who routinely watch television eventually become "passive and nonverbal" to stimuli in their environment (White, 2006). Since the normality of curiosity and imaginations of young children are the foundation of how they learn, remaining passive for extended periods of time affects their intellectual and moral development.
Television has become a big part in children’s day-to-day lives especially in the 20th century. Children in this century rely on television to keep them entertained and educated instead of entertaining and educating themselves by participating in activities, which will teach them a lot more in life then the actual television. There is no doubt that children are most easily influenced by television because of the different content that they watch as well as the amount of time consumed watching TV. In today’s world there has been huge increases in violent acts being done. Kids are turning into to bullies, murders, thieves and more. This can be happening for many different reasons. One could say it is the way the children are raised, what they see going on in their neighborhoods, what they are watching on television, seeing online, or on their video games. Everyone reacts to things differently and the violent media kids see can have different effects on each of them. According to the article “Violent Media is Good for Kids” written by Gerard Jones, violent media and other forms of ‘creative violence’ help far more children than they hurt. Gerald Jones gives examples through the article on experiences that are personal to him where violent media has been helpful but he does not give enough facts to make the reader believe it helps more children than it hurts.
Throughout the years, media has advanced along with technology. They now range in sizes, small to large, and weight, heavy and light. The means of communication we have used evolved from newspapers to televisions, social media, and the list goes on. They aid people in keeping us connected and keeping them informed of new products and of the environment. Media is an important part of the lives of neighbors, friends, family members, and the rest of the world. Many Americans feel that the viewing of violence in the media reinforces negative behavior in society, especially among children and young adults. "Three thousand studies have been done since 1955 on the link between television and violence; 2,980 of them found a correlation between the two. We hear little about that because we get most of our news from television" (Peterson). With this much research one must acknowledge that there is a problem in America involving sex and violence in the media. We cannot blame all societal problems on the media and its portrayal of these issues, but we can become educated, ourselves, in order to better facilitate the healthy lives of our children.
The effect of the media on young children is especially salient. Young children often learn how to act and behave from what they observe at home, from the adults and older peers they come in contact with, and from what they see on television.

According to the results of many studies and reports, violence on television can lead to aggressive behavior in children (Langone 50). Also, when television was introduced into a community of children for the first time, researchers observed a rise in the level of physical and verbal aggression among these children (Langone 51). The more television violence viewed by a child, the more aggressive the child is (“Children” 1).
Families nowadays leave their children without any observation or even thinking about what they are doing while using the internet connections for a long time. Children nowadays grow in a world exposed to media use. It was found that children aged 8 to 18 years had an average media usage time of 7 hours and 38 minutes daily. The average adolescent spends one-third of every day with some form of electronic media. Conclusion, media can be used to promote social growth and thinking skills. If television and the newer electronic media, is used wisely it can have great positive potential for learning and development. Television is a better medium for conveying certain types of information, and it makes learning available to group of children who do not do well in traditional school situations and even to people who cannot read well. People believe media also can make any latest new all around to world reach everyone easily via media mass in a very short time.
