Family Medicine Personal Statement

The power of medicine was first realized for me through my early years of volunteering at the Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center-Family Health Center and the Annual Wilmington Free Health Fairs. There I observed family medicine physicians and specialists provide free health care screenings, health risk assessment, and personalized health counseling for patients who had high risks such as respiratory disease, diabetes and hypertension. Many of these patients came from destitute communities that lacked the fundamental resources to aid in productive health. All of whom were medically uninsured and medically unadvised. For many, this was their first encounter with a physician. These experiences ultimately served as a trajectory for my desire to assist those medically. Prior to my community involvement, I struggled to ascertain my mission and purpose in life. Only to discover that the foundation of who I am: health, education, advocacy and empathy, were the core facets that forged my desire to pursue a career in Family Medicine. In emergency medicine, I observed ER physicians provide immediate satisfactory health results to patients without knowing the wellbeing or health progression once those patients were discharged from their service. Family Medicine provides that continuity of care, and will allow me to experience the fulfillment of building long-lasting meaningful and directed relationships with my patients and their families. As a family medicine practitioner, I will be able to create a unique medical space where the pillars of familial health and community outreach are constituted in promoting health driven patients who are educated and empowered to take full ownership of their
