Memory is a concept that we, as humans, use everyday. From recognizing others to remembering answers, memory is a task that we need for nearly anything involving thought. However, general public knows little about the process or all the ways we really use memory. Most people should be able to know how memory and recognition memory works, how false memory works, how we can improve our memory, why we remember some data wrong, what affects memory and recognition memory, how memory and recognition memory affects us, and how memory can be unhelpful.

Children who make a vivid false memory when exposed to a typical false memory implantation paradigm test, such as being let do believe that they had taken a ride once in a hot air balloon (which never happened)., are more susceptible to false memories in a DRM test than children who do not make a vivid false memory (Hunt and Lars). Memory illusions can also be salutary. A high self-awareness can result in a greater confidence, which fuels success. Remembering childhood as a happier time than it was can help one have better relationships in adulthood. It involves recognizing a situation as being familiar without being able to identify the source of the familiarity (Cohen). One can experience deja vu because a single feature or element of a new situation was also a part of a precious experience (Cohen).
Memory and recognition memory has helped people in other ways than just remembering where the keys last were. Technology with lots of memory recogniton helps users remember information (Budiu). Memory also helps us to learn, because human brains relate previous learned data with new information
However, recognition memory can be problematic in some ways. recognition memory can be a problem for teachers. An easy multiple-choice test resembles a forced-choice recognition test. If the multiple-choice test has familiar vocabulary words from the textbook or lecture in the correct answer, but not in the alternate false answers, then a student could do well on the test just by picking out the familiar words without really understanding the concept (Dewey). All the answers on the multiple-choice test must sound right to anyone who just skimmed rather than studying well. The correct response shouldn’t repeat the exact language of prior studies

Human memory is flexible and prone to suggestion. “Human memory, while remarkable in many ways, does not operate like a video camera” (Walker, 2013). In fact, human memory is quite the opposite of a video camera; it can be greatly influenced and even often distorted by interactions with its surroundings (Walker, 2013). Memory is separated into three different phases. The first phase is acquisition, which is when information is first entered into memory or the perception of an event (Samaha, 2011). The next phase is retention. Retention is the process of storing information during the period of time between the event and the recollection of a piece of information from that event (Samaha, 2011). The last stage is retrieval. Retrieval is recalling stored information about an event with the purpose of making an identification of a person in that event (Samaha, 2011).

Definition of memory and it's functions is difficult to illustrate by a single sentence. Consequently we use several metaphors to describe memory implicitly. Our beliefs, perceptions and imagination influence memory. The fact gave rise to memory being described as a reconstructive process, explaining that memory is not an exact record of a particular experience. Instead we bring various components together and fill in the blanks with our predisposed schemas while recalling.
Many of the memories that were remembered are usually previous childhood experiences. Dewhurst and Robinson (2004) conducted a study where 5, 8 and 11 year old children were tested on memory illusion. One of the procedures used to test false memories is the DRM paradigm. The DRM paradigm presents a list of words that include a critical word that is typically remembered although it was never presented. During the DRM procedure the children were given five lists that contained eight words. Each list consisted of at least one rhyme and a semantic theme. Memory is a group of related mental processes that are involved in acquiring, storing, and retrieving information (Hockenberry and Hocenberry page 232). I will be addressing two specific types of memory: short-term memory and long-term memory. Short-term memory holds temporary information transferred from sensory memory or long-term memory. Sensory memory is the first stage of memory and obtains information for a brief amount of time. Short-term memory is also called active memory and is stored in the prefrontal cortex which is the most active part of the brain during an activity. Similar studies were done to a different set of college students and they tended to have the same results. After giving as much detail about each memory, the students were interviewed about what they may have written done about what they had remembered. During the last part of the experiment, each of the students were debriefed and asked to guess which memory they believed was false.

Memory is the tool we use to learn and think. We all use memory in our everyday lives. Memory is the mental faculty of retaining and recalling past experiences. We all reassure ourselves that our memories are accurate and precise. Many people believe that they would be able to remember anything from the event and the different features of the situation. Yet, people don’t realize the fact that the more you think about a situation the more likely the story will change. Our memories are not a camcorder or a camera. Our memory tends to be very selective and reconstructive.
The findings of this research would reinforce findings of previous research specifically in relation to the robustness of false memories. The experiment undertaken by students will also be helpful to the study of false memories specifically to test the reproducibility of this type of experiment.
Learning to tie shoes and ride a bike requires the encoding, storing, and retrieving of past observations of the procedure. With a lot of practice, children master these skills so well that they are able to remember them the rest of their lives. Memory is the storing of information over time. It is one of the most important concepts in learning; if things are not remembered, no learning can take place. As a process, memory refers to the "dynamic mechanism associated with the retention and retrieval of information about past experiences" (Sternberg 260). We use our memory about the past to help us understand the present. The study or memory in psychology is used in different ways, as well as there are many different ways to study how memory works in humans. In psychology there are many tasks used to measure memory, and different types of memory storages that human's use, such as sensory storing, or short term storing. There are also a lot of techniques that humans use to improve their memory, which they can use to learn, such as mnemonic devices. All these things can be classified as important issues in the study of human memory and ways of learning.
