In the movie Signs, director M. Night Shyamalan, creates a story about faith to illustrate that everything happens for a reason. Shyamalan utilizes character development, Graham’s philosophies about belief, the interrelationships throughout the movie, and the alien invasion to demonstrate this central message. The story is a character heavy driven plot. Protagonist Graham Hess is hurting and has left his faith in light of the recent death of his wife, Colleen. After the death, Graham’s brother, Merrill, comes to live with them. Merrill is a brave fighter who believes in miracles, but looks up to Graham for guidance. The Hess children, Bo and Morgan, are both very smart and observant. Both children have been affected negatively by the death of their mother, but Morgan more so than Bo. Due to the unexpected decease of his mom, Morgan has turned his confusion and hurt towards Graham, blaming him for the death of Colleen. This leads to tension within the family between Morgan and Graham. Because of Morgan’s hatred for him, Graham distances himself from the family. This forces Morgan to become a fatherly figure to Bo. This is seen when Morgan protects Bo from their dog who tries to attack her and …show more content…
when Bo, in most cases, automatically goes to Morgan for comfort when she is scared. The feelings Morgan has towards Graham, are the same feelings that Graham has towards God, his heavenly father. Graham hates God for allowing the death of Colleen and doesn’t understand why God would let this happen to him. After the tragedy, Graham’s comes to the conclusion that there are two types of people. In group one, the people are believers of signs and miracles. They believe someone is looking out for them and that everything happens for a reason. While in group two, the people are suspicious and believe everything happens out of pure luck. They believe that they are alone in the world. In the first half of the movie, Graham is in group two. He believes himself to be alone and that everything that has happened to him is out of bad luck. Graham throughout the movie cannot seem to transition out of group two. If he were to start believing in group one, then he must come to terms that his wife’s death is for a specific reason. At multiple parts in the movie, he returns back to the moments of Colleen’s death and relives them. In one flashback of time, Graham is remembering his last conversation with Colleen and she tells Graham that he needs to “see”. Once Graham transitions back into group one because of Colleen’s words, he sees the signs all around. He realizes the reason for Morgan’s asthma is for the exact moment when the alien pours the poison gas into Morgan’s nostrils. The gas cannot reach his lungs because they were closed. The reason for Bo’s tick with assuming waters contamination was to create water bombs throughout the house that allowed Merrill to kill the alien. Water is like acid to the alien’s skin, so when poured on the alien, the water made the alien weaker. Merrill’s past experiences of being a minor league baseball player led him to own a bat that he had used to hit a ball 507 feet. He brought this bat to the Hess family’s house when he moved in which he used against the alien. The death of Colleen led Merrill to move into the Hess’s house. If not for the passing of Colleen, the Hess family might not have survived the alien attack because Merrill would not have been there. All while this inner conflict of the family is occurring, the invasion of the aliens creates a sideline story that hastens the conflict to resolution.
The night of the alien invasion, the family experiences a last supper where Morgan expresses his hatred for Graham for letting his mom die. The tension between Graham and Morgan is finally put into words which leads to the release of emotions between the two. At this moment, the family finally comes together to address the hurt they’ve all been feeling after the loss of Colleen. If the aliens had never come, who knows how long the conflict between Morgan and Graham would have ensued. But, because, of the imminence of their possible demise, the feelings were put out into the open allowing for the healing process to
begin. M. Night Shyamalan builds a story of a man whose faith is tested, accelerated by a secondary story of an alien invasion, to prove that there are signs in everything.
Wes (the author) has a family who wants to see him succeed. Although Wes didn’t know his father for long, the two memories he had of him and the endless stories his mother would share with him, helped guide him through the right path. His mother, made one of the biggest effects in Wes’s life when she decided to send him to military story, after seeing he was going down the wrong path. Perhaps, the other Wes’s mother tried her best to make sure he grew up to be a good person, but unfortunately Wes never listen. His brother, Tony was a drug dealer who wish he could go back in time and make the right decisions and he wanted Wes to be different than him. He didn’t want his brother to end up like him and even after he tried everything to keep Wes away from drugs, nothing worked and he gave up. As you can see, both families are very different, Wes (the author) has a family who wants him to have a bright future. Most importantly, a family who responds fast because right after his mother saw him falling down the wrong hill she didn’t hesitate to do something about it. The other Wes isn’t as lucky, as I believe since his mother already had so much pressure over keeping her job and her son Tony being involved in drugs. Same thing with Tony, he was so caught up in his own business that no one payed so much attention to
Faith is an important aspect in everybody. It helps us see God, and believe in him. Our faith is always tested when there is a hard theological decision to make or somebody else trying to break your bold with God. The movie Field of Dreams, is a great example of how staying true to your faith can sometimes be hard.

...victims, the Walls siblings may not have chosen to overcome their painful history to become such strong and successful individuals. The abdication of what one could consider appropriate parental responsibility by moving to Welch isolated the children in a very hard environment. In their time there, the remarkable survival skills and character that the children developed served as a source of strength in their escape from their environment. Their determination in forging a better future for themselves is realized by utilizing the skills they formed while trapped in Welch. The courage to embrace change; putting aside such a deplorable childhood speaks volumes about the remarkable ability of these siblings to overcome hardship and achieve their own powerful and unique lives.
The story is simply predictable which makes situational ironies throughout the story a little challenging to find. At the end of the book it became less of challenge. The beginning of the book it starts off with the main characters Jenna and Randolph who fall deeply in love and face many struggles to prevent them from being together, which they then are separated and then years later reunited. For the years that they are away from another they each have children from other persons. From the bond that the two main characters share is so strong and so powerful it passed down to their children. The story leads you to think one way but unexpectedly sneaks up turning into somethin...
In conclusion, this was an awesome story. The above questions were the catalyst to the real truth that would make the brother to that little girl free at last. His son was determined to break the cycle and remedy this generational condition, although the means by which he used were terrible. But, he would get through to his father. He shed light in the dark place by first beating his father into sobriety, so that he could think clearly. He then helped his father to open up to the discussion concerning the secret he had held on to for so long. Then, he also convinced his father to burn the “Shawl” of his deceased sister. And finally, his father realized what the true story was. A story that would in turn loose the tie that bound them all together with generational sorrows.
In conclusion, the most evident theme in this story is that everyone have problems mentally, that they need to overcome. Christopher, the mother, and the father are examples supporting this theme. Although, Christopher finds it difficult to recognize emotions, follow instructions, talk to strangers etc. he tries hard to overcome it. His behavioral problems, and care for others has improved over time proving that overtime his problems can be fixed. Ed Boone, the father has problem managing his emotions and often gets out of control but tries to control them for his son's sake. The mother, Judy Boone, faces problems with impatience but after parting with Christopher, shows significant improvement in her patience levels. Overall, no matter how bad a psychological problem is, there is always a way out if given time.
...hut the child out of their lives. Rather than dealing with the mistake or misfortune as a parent should do and stand by their child’s side, both parents ran away and tried to hide from the problem. The feelings of each character were completely forgotten and lost. Each were treated as some sort of object that could be thrown away and replaced. And ultimately, the outcomes in their lives reflected their poor parenting. The choices they made unfortunately came from the lack of skills they were taught when they were young and impressionable. Neither character knows what it is like to be a part of a loving family because they were both used as objects for money or fame. Sadly, the lack of parenting led to the demise of each and we are reminded, from over a hundred years ago as well as today, that successful parenting today will lead to successful adults for the future.
During childhood and adolescence, we are all faced with decisions that will affect our futures. Even a simple choice such as choosing books to read or clothes to wear can make an impact on our lives. The decisions made by Will Parker in The White Mountains and Sam Meeker in My Brother Sam Is Dead, however, are of a much greater magnitude. Their difficult decisions change the lives of many other characters. By choosing to go against their families' beliefs, Will and Sam both become orphans. The two young men are cast out into a dangerous world and have to learn about independence and its hardships.
A breathtaking saga of a young girl’s tragic memories of her childhood. As with Ellen, Gibbons’ parents both died before she was twelve-years-old, forming the family. basis of the plot and themes of this novel. The fond memories she possessed of her mother and the harsh ones of her father are reflected in the thoughts and actions of Ellen. The simplistic and humble attitude that both Gibbons and Ellen epitomizes in the novel is portrayed through diction and dialogue.
The eldest brother who is also the narrator of the story gives the reader a glimpse into their lives and the struggles that he and his younger brother Sonny go through. Through the narrators eyes Baldwin does a wonderful job showing how the brothers grew up to lead different lives but are both still struggling from the hold that poverty in Harlem has on them. Baldwin shows how both “the narrator and Sonny are both imprisoned and also free in exactly opposites ways” (spark note). For example, Sonny has physically been imprisoned due to his addiction to drugs but was able to escape from Harlem and create his own life through music. Whereas the narrator is physically free but trapped in the housing projects of Harlem which he clearly hates. It is Baldwin’s unique style of writing that has the characters asking themselves the question, “Does one embrace the hand that they are dealt in order to live or does one bow down and allow it to consume them?” Baldwin shows how each brother at different times in their life allowed for it to do both. For instance, in the beginning Sonny seemed to be consumed by his suffering which led him down the path of drugs but by the end he had embraced it and let his suffering playout through music. The narrator on the other hand seemed to embrace everything that he was dealt and did the best he could to better his life.

When the aliens, the lesser of the conflicts, invade it brings everything together and grahams starts to see the signs and is able to save his family.
Ultimately, the characters’ lack of morals led to their downfall. Every person’s individual childhood experience, or lack of one, was the detrimental factor to their mistakes. This all shows the human need of attention and guidance. Human interaction and strong moral based family structure is key to surviving in life.
