How Fairy Tales Affect Future Generations Fairy Tales have been around for many centuries. Most children around the world have heard a fairy tale once or twice in their lives. In the most recent century, Fairy Tales have made their way into Hollywood films, mainly Disney Films. Growing up particularly in the late 1990s, almost every child either watched Disney films at home or while attending preschool. Now that twenty years have come and gone, I would like to see if those children born during that time feel fairy tale lessons are important enough to push down to the next generation. This study was produced by using qualitative research methods to see if fairy tales are affecting past and future generations (Merriam, 2009). This research study includes interview questions answered by 30 participants demonstrating how fairy tales did affect their generation and this data is used to show if fairy tales will continue to affect future generations. Underneath the magical story of fairy tales lays a reservoir of everlasting stories of life lessons that are passed down from generations to generations. This study will show if fairy tales have effects on the participants’ lives as young adults. The study will also show if there are differences in how the children comprehend the stories differently after being read the fairy tales or after watching the stories acted out through a movie. I learned that to my surprise they did not like Cinderella. Mainly the male population of my survey did not like Cinderella because they feel the fairy tale teaches young girls to flaunt around for attention. Personally, I think Cinderella is one of the best fairy tales and I believe that it is also well loved throughout the world, but this is due to my recent study of the original Cinderella; not the Hollywood version. When I asked the participants what their favorite fairy tale was they responded with 101 Dalmatians. That kind of baffled me because I had never thought of 101 Dalmatians as a fairy tale; however, I can see how today’s generations will deem it as such. So I did a little research and found out that it was classified as a fairy tale that was even more surprising to me. After going back and rereading some of the main parts in 101 Dalmatians I realized, that in fact, it was a fairy tale and had some of the main characteristics of the original fairy tale. It all begins with “Once upon a time” and ends with “and they lived happily ever after”. “Cinderella” is a very widely known story that many children around the world look up to and admire through their entire life. The history of this story, how scholars interpret this tale, and how the authors have retold the story are all key points to keeping this story fresh and popular. Most of the time when people hear the story of “Cinderella”, they think about the Disney version and maybe it is time that changes. All in all, the story brings light to everyone’s life even if they only know the original “Cinderella”.
Children can identify themselves with fairy-tale characters; they imagine themselves as heroes, who are capable of killing dragons, or simpletons, who demonstrate the superiority over clever people. Fantasies based on the fairy tales are extremely important part of the children’s lives, and this is not only because they describe threatening situations that resemble main fears of a young child such as the fear of getting lost, fear of wrong decisions, fear of monsters or evil animals. Happy endings, which are always present in fairy tales, give children the confidence that despite all their fears they will be able to win in the end. This knowledge helps them to prepare for the difficulties of life, regardless whether they are real or imagined (Doughty, 2006).

A fairytale is a fictional fantasy fable that passes through generations of children as source of interest to them. Though used for the intent of entertainment, fairytales often indirectly advocate a moral or message to readers (whom are usually children), in hopes that they will grow up to apply these ethics and lead a righteous life. This criteria, however, often originates from the occurrence of a magical transformation; it is this paranormality that introduces the characters of the story to a side of life far from what they have grown to know and learn to adapt to the dramatic amend in their life. This is evident in the characters in world-renowned tales such as The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast.
Fairy tales portray wonderful, elaborate, and colorful worlds as well as chilling, frightening, dark worlds in which ugly beasts are transformed into princes and evil persons are turned to stones and good persons back to flesh (Guroian). Fairytales have long been a part of our world and have taken several forms ranging from simple bedtime stories to intricate plays, musicals, and movies. However, these seemingly simple stories are about much more than pixie dust and poisoned apples. One could compare fairytales to the new Chef Boyardee; Chef Boyardee hides vegetables in its ravioli while fairytales hide society’s morals and many life lessons in these outwardly simple children stories. Because of this fairytales have long been instruments used to instruct children on the morals of their culture. They use stories to teach children that the rude and cruel do not succeed in life in the long run. They teach children that they should strive to be kind, caring, and giving like the longsuffering protagonists of the fairytale stories. Also, they teach that good does ultimately defeat evil. Fairy tales are not just simple bedtime stories; they have long been introducing cultural moral values into young children.

When the word “fairytale” is mentioned, nearly everyone thinks of light-hearted stories with friendly characters and happy endings. However, these are not the ideas that classic fairytales originally sparked. In fact, numerous modern Disney movies were based off stories that were not so sugar coated. In the 19th century, the Brothers Grimm were responsible for multiple of these popular children’s tales. The Disney remakes of classic fairytales such as Cinderella, Tangled, and Snow White exclude the dark, twisted themes that are significant in the Brothers Grimm fairytales, because society tendencies continue to evolve toward sheltering and overprotecting young children.

Fairy Tales have been around for generations and generations. Our parents have told us these stories and we will eventually pass them down to ours.
