Technology has played a big role throughout history, with its positive impacts also coming their negative impacts as Ray Bradbury captures in Fahrenheit 451. In the story, the main character, Guy Montag, is stuck in a world that is controlled by technology. His main job is working as a fireman, but firemen burn illegal things in this society. This includes books of all kinds. This all changes when he meets a teenager named Clarisse McClellan, who causes him to think differently about who and what he is. In the text, Bradbury’s message is to warn society about the control that technology has on people. He uses characters like Mildred and Clarisse in his book to portray how technology can negatively impact the minds of the public. In the society …show more content…

This is shown through what she labeled the parlor walls as her family. Though having never met the people on the walls, Mildred feels short-term happiness when watching them, replacing genuine relationships with people who aren't even real. Later on the same page, she proves that point further. In the same conversation, Mildred talks about how she had a “nice evening”(46) when asked why she explains it was only because of the “Programs”(46) she was watching. With a shallow character like Mildred, it’s only natural that what she amounts to her days to be is just as shallow. From the way she forms her sentences to her physical appearance, her shallowness is all a product of the amount of mindless entertainment she's been exposed to. Mildred’s character is a great example that Bradbury created to show how technology can negatively affect the minds of people. Meeting Clarisse and talking with her make Montag look at things in a different light, ultimately making him realize how much technology has impacted
