Suki Kim the author of the story “Facing Poverty with a Rich Girl’s Habits”, she discusses her challenges and hardships moving to America. She was born into living this luxurious millionaire lifestyle in South Korea, until one day her world gets turned upside down. Suki Kim along with her dad is forced to move to Queens, New York. Young Suki Kim goes from riches to rags in her story. It starts when Suki Kim witnessed her dad go under bankruptcy. In Korea bankruptcy was punishable by a jail term at the time. This triggered the effect of Suki Kim and her dad coming to America. Suki Kim realized there is major differences in American and Korean culture. In Korean schools, the classrooms are more strict. An example of this is, students are expected
to bow when they encounter a teacher. Unlike in American schools, who are credited to be more liberal and lenient. For example, in America Suki Kim noticed a teacher completely ignore a couple French kissing during class time. Furthermore, Suki Kim noted that there was differences within her own Korean ethnicity. Also, she was informed that the wealthier Korean students in America attended private schools and resided in Manhattan or Westchester. In addition, that her fellow E.S.L. Korean students in America would have been classified as the lower class in Korea. The lesson learned from Suki Kim is that money provides stability but in order to escalate to higher places we must reach unity. People must learn how to be adaptive. Take Suki Kim for example who had to change her princess-like mentality and ways in order to survive in a new country. In conclusion, all humans regardless of the category they are placed in on the socioeconomic scale should learn to live multiple lives.
Life for young Elva Treviño Hart was less than ideal and in her autobiography, Barefoot Heart she vividly explains the back-breaking work, financial hardships, and emotional struggles a migrant worker faces. Influenced by the struggles of day-to-day life, migrant work, school life, and society, Elva was shown over and over again what life would be like if she did not make an effort to change her predestined life. All too commonly people like Elva Treviño who are born into poverty will remain living in such conditions for the rest of their lives; however, growing up in poor conditions will have a great positive influence the life decisions someone like Elva makes.

Shipler describes a vicious cycle of low paying jobs, health issues, abuse, addiction, and other factors that all combine to create a mountain of adversity that is virtually impossible to overcome. Since there is neither one problem nor one solution to poverty, Shipler connects all of the issues together to show how they escalate each other. Poor children are abused, drugs and gangs run rampant in the poor neighborhoods, low wage dead end jobs, immigrants are exploited, high interest loans and credit cards entice people in times of crisis and unhealthy diets and lack of health care cause a multitude of problems. The only way that we can begin to see positive change is through a community approach joining the poverty stricken individuals, community, businesses, and government to band together to make a commitment to improve all areas that need help.
The novel “Women Without class” by Julie Bettie, is a society in which the cultural you come from and the identity that was chosen for you defines who you are. How does cultural and identity illustrate who we are or will become? Julie Bettie demonstrates how class is based on color, ethnicity, gender and sexuality. The author describes this by researching her work on high school girls at a Central Valley high school. In Bettie’s novel she reveals different cliques that are associated within the group which are Las Chicas, Skaters, Hicks, Preps, and lastly Cholas and Cholos. The author also explains how race and ethnicity correspondence on how academically well these students do. I will be arguing how Julie Bettie connects her theories of inequality and culture capital to Pierre Bourdieu, Kimberle Crenshaw, Karl Marx and Engels but also how her research explains inequality among students based on cultural capital and identity.
In Loewen and Hooks, both authors talk about poverty and class. They both talk about class structure and social class in their essays. Social class is one of the most important things in society. Loewen’s essay is more about why people are poor and how they survive under what class someone is in. He talks about rich and poor children and how their health could be involved. He also says, “Everyone has a chance in this land of opportunity”. As the reader, he is saying everyone isn’t given an equal opportunity in this day of age, especially the lower class. Hooks talk about her experience more as a child in poverty and how poverty was no disgrace in her household. She shows a lot of her emotions and what she went through to get where she is today. Thinking about not being able to use water whenever one needs it is tough to think about. Although, being poor should not be a considered a bad thing or be put into a negative light it is every day and they are judged. If someone is poor that doesn’t make them a terrible, lazy person. Where ever someone goes they may see it in the streets or in stores and, most of us don’t want to help anymore. Wealth differences are ten times larger than income differences in America.
The idea that people of poor communities conform to a living standard and behavior is a concept described by Oscar Lewis as the culture of poverty. It is the belief that poor people consists of their own beliefs and values and behaviors. And more than 45 years later after the term, the culture of poverty paradigm remains the same: there is a consistent and observable culture that is shared by people in poverty. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as the culture of poverty. differences in behaviors and values among those that are poor are just as significant as those between wealthy and poor. Having a family of low socioeconomic status inevitably leaves me to reside in a low-income neighborhood which makes it more likely for me to witness the tragedies, adversities and hardships that people go through [not excluding myself]. This invisible fence that prevents me from these extracurricular activities enables me to having more appreciation towards the hobbies and talents that other people have. Plus, the fact that my family’s low socioeconomic status acts as a barrier from enjoying expensive luxuries in life creates a yearning [in me] to enjoy them later on in my life, in addition to acting as the fuel to my wish of achieving social mobility in anticipation of providing my own children with the luxurious vacations, gadgets, beachhouse, new cars that I could not

In the excerpt “Rich and Poor” from Peter Singer’s book “Practical Ethics,” Singer critiques how he portrays the way we respond to both absolute poverty and absolute affluence. Before coming to this class, I have always believed that donating or giving something of your own to help someone else is a moral decision. After reading Peter Singer’s argument that we are obligated to assist extreme poverty, I remain with the same beliefs I previously had. I will argue that Singer’s argument is not convincing. I will demonstrate that there are important differences between being obligated to save a small child from drowning (in his Shallow Pond Example) and being obligated to assist absolute poverty. These differences restrict his argument by analogy for the obligation to assist in the case of absolute poverty.
