FIG Program Reflection

The FIG program is valuable to freshman because bridges the gap between the high school experience and the college experience by giving students a middle ground during their first semester. During this time, freshman can get one-on-one help and group help with adjusting to college life and learning how to do everything on campus. The program can also give students an incredible opportunity to make friends in college, when it’s entirely different from high school. Overall, FIGs help freshmen in adjusting to college life in every respect possible. The FIG program serves to ease students into college life. The first thing I did with my FIG was days after I got assigned when I registered for classes at freshman orientation. The process was so stressful, and I was just glad I had a FIG unique number to take the pressure off for my first registration, since I knew I was getting into at least three classes. Nothing shown there is extra work, more than regularly existing, which encourages students to embrace the great opportunity they have to learn about their campus and programs offered on it. A FIG mentor is valuable to the students because they have experienced everything the freshmen are and have personalized advice to offer. Another incredible resource available during this time, in addition to the experienced upperclassman, is the surrounding students who may have knowledge about things their peers don’t and vice versa. A class having only one age group in it, unlike in high school, is rare in college and therefore this is an experience they likely wouldn’t be able to replicate without the FIG program. This is especially helpful for freshmen because, unlike other classifications, everyone is more or less in the same position.
