A simulated flight environment for pilot training may soon be made more realistic through the use of eye-tracking technology developed by researchers at the University of Toronto's Institute of Biomedical Engineering (IMBE). Many safety and cost benefits are obtained by training aircraft pilots under simulated conditions, but to be effective the simulation must be convicingly realistic. At present, th e training facilities use large domes and gimballed projectors, or an array of video screens, to display computer-generated images. But these installations are very expensive and image resolution is low. Further, it would take an enormous amount of addi to improve image quality significantly throughout the whole viewed scene. However, based on the visual properties of the eye, realism can be obtained by providing a high-resolution 'area of interest' insert within a large, low-resolution field of view.
If the image-generating computer 'knows' where the pilot's fixation is, it mage there. The technology to make this possible was developed by a research team headed by Professor Richard Frecker and Professor Moshe Eizenman. The work was carried out in collaboration with CAE Electronics Ltd. of Montreal with financial support from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. Their eye-tracker can record and analyze accurately up to 500 eye positions per second.
The system works by means of capturing and processing the reflections of a low-level beam o f invisible infra-red light shone onto the eye. Multi-element arrays capture the image of the eye and digitize the information, which is then processed in real time by a fast, dedicated signal processing unit. The difference in position between the ligh tre of the pupil reveals the instantaneous direction of gaze. Developments by the IBME team have significantly increased the speed of signal processing in addition to enhancing accuracy of eye position estimates. Eizenman believes that "these improvements make our eye-tracker very effective in monitoring the large G-force environment where the pilot tends to make larger eye movements because of contraints which exist on movements of his head". In a new generation of aircraft simulators, under development by CAE Electronics Ltd.
of Montreal, a head tracker which tells the direction of the pilot's head is mounted on top of the helmet. The eye tracker is mounted on the front of the helmet, and is ll exactly where the pilot's eye is fixating. Frecker said that "successful integration of our eye tracker into the novel helmet-mounted CAE flight simulator would result in a new generation of simulators that would likely replace the current large domes and cumbersome video display units.

“I’m turning to fire again when the second knife catches me in the forehead. It slices above my right eyebrow, opening a gash that sends a gush running down my face, blinding my eye, filling my mouth with the sharp, metallic taste of my blood” (Collins,284). In The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins, Panem is seen to be North America’s dystopia. It has the powerful Capital surrounded by twelve districts. The Capital rules all districts and keeps them at their mercy by forcing them to send one boy and one girl, ages twelve to eighteen to take place in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death. Sixteen year old Katniss Everdeen gives the ultimate sacrifice when she volunteers to take her twelve year old
A powerful worldwide surveillance system is being built up and the world is being watched. Spy satellites are orbiting the earth, those are the eyes in the sky, and millions of video cameras and other sensors are scattered on the earth, the eyes and ears on the ground. The computer networks are continually growing, the brians of the system. Implantable microchips with miniature digital transceivers are attached to many objects and animals, and lately to some hu...
Katniss Everdeen, the protagonist, of the Hunger Games frequently showcases the quality of selflessness throughout the novel, although when she volunteers herself as tribute in place of her sister, is certainly a moment worthy of recognition. Selflessness is when someone has a deeper concern of others than one's own. "I volunteer, I volunteer as tribute!" are the words of Katniss at the reaping when her sister Prim was chosen to participate in the annual Hunger Games. Through volunteering, Katniss had expressed her love and loyalty for her sister, so much so that she would give her life. Katniss' act of selflessness had highlighted the strong bond that her and her sister, Prim share. Repetition is used to emphasise Katniss selfless decision, which further highlights her determination to risk her life for those she loves. The readers can, therefore, view
My interest in the career of optometry stems from my first experience in the optometry office to receive my first pair of glasses when I was in middle school. I distinctly remember the moment when my optometrist slipped my new glasses over my eyes for the first time. Suddenly, everything in the room came into sharp, clear focus. I knew that the glasses would help me see the board in school, but I was astonished to find that I could see small details about the room, as it had never before occurred to me that I should have been able to see these details. I was also surprised that I was even able to see the expressions on the faces of people who were standing far away from me. It was one of the most incredible, freeing, and empowering moments of my life. As I walked out of the optometry office, I felt
...ends. Also, Katniss begins to care about other districts, like when she decorated Rue’s body with flowers to show District 11 that they weren’t the only ones who mourned her death. They thank her with the gift of a piece of bread. Another way Katniss becomes more caring is by realizing that each kill affects a family. This leads to Katniss wishing that she did not have to kill any more Tributes. Katniss wishes that there were a way for her to win the Hunger Games without killing anyone else.
The symbolism of Young Goodman Brown’s moral decline bypasses the conscious, logical mind and is located in a more dreamlike process. It is interpreted to show that no one truly falls into the category of good or evil. Hawthorne’s use of symbolism shows the neutrality between good and evil and appearance and reality so that the reader is unable to comprehend the difference. Throughout the story, good and evil are described through a bombardment of metaphors. Brown’s long and winding journey through the forest, for example, represents his struggle between his conscious and subconscious. Brown meets the devil at a fork in the road that symbolizes the paths to heaven or hell. Obviously with the devil at his side, Brown took the latter.
A common emotion that describers the African American community in the media is anger. Anger is often associated with being a negative emotion but it is not. Its important to feel intense emotions such as anger because if we didn’t we wouldn’t be human. Baldwin in Notes of a Native Son, describes the innate anger black people hold, “there is no negro alive who doesn’t have this rage in his blood- one has the choice, merely of living with it consciously or surrendering to in (Baldwin 57)”. He believes that all black Americans hold this innate sort of anger. I can definitely see how this is true. How many times can a group of people be beat down before someone becomes angry? With all people, sometimes the way anger is handled is done incorrectly. Its how we handle this anger, which is important. Putting this anger into a use of education, by educating the public about the injustices going on. This will then spark debates within the black community and across all racial barriers. It will break this barrier that puts us in a place of hate. Like previously mentioned, humans innately always want to be in the “in group”, it’s an evolutionary fact. To be placed out of a group is very detrimental to one’s emotional wellbeing. Society always wants to separate us, and this is done by our own wrong
Revenge is such an enormous part of a being human. It is something that no matter how much you try to avoid part of you will persistently lust for it. When you are hurt in any way your natural instinct will always tell you to make the one who hurt you feel just as bad if not worse as how you felt. It is such a natural and powerful feeling, that when revenge is incorporated into a story it makes it so much stronger. Revenge will make you see so many more sides of characters and make them seem much more complex. Revenge can give fictional characters a more human quality. That is why so many writers use it as their theme.
That is to say, that Goodman Brown is inexplicably attracted to evil, yet once he comes in contact with evil, he shies away, culminating to create an indecisive character, thus generating the idea of his “brown” disposition. Initially, Brown seems to be nothing more than a happy newlywed, until Hawthorne unexpectedly twists the story, and Brown leaves his new wife, Faith, with the intention of participating in an evil ritual. Any guilt Brown feels in beginning the journey is quelled by thoughts Faith’s virtue, which he believes will secure him a place in heaven, and having so calmed himself, he feels “justified in making more haste on his present evil purpose” (Hawthorne 1346). However, shortly upon venturing into a dark forest, Brown’s resolve soon begins to fade, and he even refuses to continue the journey at one point saying, “Not another step will I budge on this errand” (Hawthorne 1349). Brown’s reluctance to fully commit to either the light or the dark illustrates
When first analyzing this topic, one must first distinguish the difference between revenge and justice. Revenge is the act of retaliation against someone or something normally to make themselves feel better.
Your first decision when running your airline was to choose the sector it operated in — discount, normal or luxury. Therefore, you had to segment the market. How did you do this? As the simulation progressed, did you change your market segmentation? Why? In your judgement, did you segment the market successfully? Why? If not, why not?
A helpful feature that the Army Battle Command System has is a touch screen monitor which allows the officer to place icons on the map and have it appear on screens throughout the system which makes them able to show enemy position, possible ambush locations, fugitive hide outs and locations of newly found roadside bombs.
For every 1,000 girls between the ages fifteen and nineteen, 72.6 got pregnant in 2010 down from 98.8 in 2001. The rate was 43.1 for girls fifteen to seventeen and 114.5 for eighteen and nineteen year old girls. There are about 19,080 teen pregnancies a year in the city down from 24,815 in 2001. Sexual activity has also dropped from 50.9% to 37.8% (Beck). Teens are now using more contraceptives and are slowing down when it comes to having sex. New York City has made it easier for students to have access to condoms, birth control and the morning after pill through their school clinics and since they have been offering it pregnancy is going down (Durkin,
