People spend one-third of their lives sleeping. It is as important as food, air, and water. When people sleep well, they wake up reinvigorated and prepared for the day. On the other hand, an inadequate amount of sleep often makes people moody and usually results in a bad day (“Sleep and Sleep Disorders”). Many people do not get as much sleep as they need because they would rather get more things accomplished during the day or spend more time having fun. Even though many people think that sleep is not necessary, it is very important in maintaining a person’s mental health, physical health, and quality of life. Sleep is necessary for a person to remain healthy mentally. The brain requires sleep for it to work. Sleep gives the brain time to get ready for the next day. During sleep, the brain is coming up with new ways that make learning and remembering possible. Better learning occurs after a good night’s sleep. Sleep makes it easier to pay attention and make decisions. “Whether you’re learning math, how to play the piano, how to perfect your golf swing, or how to drive a car, sleep helps enhance your learning and problem-solving skills” (How Much Sleep Is Enough?). The heart and blood vessels are repaired during sleep. Sleep enables the body to balance hormones. It also aids in healthy growth and development. Sleep causes the body to release a hormone that contributes to growth, strengthens muscle mass, and helps repair tissues and cells. Puberty and reproduction are affected by sleep. Sleep gives the immune system strength to fight against harmful substances so if the body doesn’t get sleep, it may not be able to fight infections (How Much Sleep Is Enough?).
