What will happen if every kid played only one sport? You might think ‘they would get good at the sport’ but that is not the case. About 71% of Football athletes play multiple sports and these athletes are all very successful and can incorporate skills needed for that athlete to be triumphant. Also specializing in a sport can put a lot of pressure on a young child and can cause them to be stressed out which might cause them to quit the sport altogether. The athlete also may not be liking that sport anymore due to the fact that it is not for fun it is now a large part of the athlete's life.
Athletes should not specialize in sports because playing multiple sports can make them more successful in the athlete's main sport. For example, Quarterback Nick Foles was great in his 2013 season. and was one of two quarterbacks ever to have 2 interceptions and 2500+ yards in a season. But next year he did not do so well and he was specializing in his sport, he also didn’t do so great in the 2015 season and almost quit the sport after these substandard seasons. Team sports like football teach dedication , teamwork, and all teams focus keeping up grades. These are all incredibly important for kids to know and learn about That's why i would definitely allow my son to play in football or any other contact sport. One big problem i've seen around is that kids don't normally stick to one thing for long, but kids that decide to join sports teams and have an opportunity to enjoy the game will surely stick to the game. The are also more likely to not only want to play the game but also they would want to make friends on the team and spent a large majority of their time ether practicing or with members of their team. I have decided to write a response paper to Ekow N. Yankah’s: “Why N.C.A.A. Athletes Shouldn’t Be Paid”. Although I enjoyed reading his perspective, I do not agree with his statement which addresses that student-athletes shouldn 't get paid. Universities are using their student-athlete’s popularity to promote their athletics program while the student-athletes are unable to promote their own image. Student-athletes work hard day in and day out, basically like having a full time job. Which makes time is also very limited during the day for student athletes to get a real job to pay for the extra expenses that they need. Also, most of the time coaches will not allow the student athletes to work, because of their conflicting schedules with practice.
The only reason some athletes make it to college is due to scholarships for their performance on the field. If they don’t perform well on the field, that scholarship might get cut. This makes practicing the athletes a main priority. However, college athletes have to concentrate on their grades so they don’t drop out of college. These athletes know they may not make it to the pro’s, so they know they have to have a back-up plan.
Football is possibly too dangerous of a game for young boys and girls to be playing. I am not talking about all forms of football, but more specifically tackle football. Yes, football may possibly be one of America’s loved sport because of the brutality that it consists of; although I believe that there should be an age where kids should start playing such a horrific game. At the age of ten young boys, and girls, should be worrying about who they are going to be playing with outside at recess. Kids should not have to be worried about their friends having to miss school because of a concussion, or worse him or herself.
More specifically, children are also increasingly pressured--again, usually by parents and coaches--to specialize in one sport and to play it year-round, often on several different teams (Perry). Now, if sports specialization is such a great idea, then why are kids being “pressured”? As stated before, sports specialization can result in severe injury or even retirement from sports all together. Evidently, parents would not want to risk their athlete’s entire athletic career just because of an overuse injury. Knowing this, a diversity in sports activities is the solution to the problem. Additionally, a specialization in sports can lead to the young athlete not experiencing a sport that he or she may truly enjoy in their life. If a parent already makes a child decide on a sport to play, how will the child know if that is the sport they truly want to participate in? As the child ages, they could realize that the sport they play now is not one that they love anymore, so they could just quit. Deciding at such a young age is not only a hasty decision, but also a terrible one. Finally, this specialization can also create social problems. If a child is already so competitively involved in a sport, then their social lives and relationships with friends are at risk. Pressure is something everyone experiences. However, athletes experience some of the same pressure that of non-athletes and then some. Being on a sports team is demanding to time and the idea of being “superior”. In athletics, coaches are everything. For example, If a coach likes how a person attributes as a team player, then that person will get a chance to shine. A recent study of issues and concerns related to present-day school sports revealed that the coaches, athletic directors, school principals, parents of athletes, and also the athletes felt that there was a pressure to specialize in a single sport and to do so at an early age (“Journal of Physical Education,” n.d.).
There are many consequences to playing and training to be the best in one sport. The main risks for kids who specialize in a sport is that they may go through burnout. They do the same sport over and over, and then they have the adults in their life putting pressure on them causing them to burnout. Kids get to the point when they feel helpless and not being able to meet the expectations for the adults , causing them to burnout in their sport. (Rerick 1). Athletes that specialize in one sport are at risk for injuries, these injuries usually happen at growth plates, ligaments, as well as joints. Depending on the sport you play you injuries will be in the shoulder, elbow, knee, or ankle. Today more and more people that specialize in one sport have injuries due to overuse. (UVM Medical Center 1). For children who have been specializing in a sport since they were very young, they may get to the point where playing at practicing and in a game is not fun anymore. With the combination of boredom, pressure to be good, and stress may cause them to drop out of the sport they used to loved. (Hess 2-3). When one sport is not fun or there is too much stress involved it could cause them to give it up. Pressure gets to kids and can make the sport they love become the sport they don't like anymore.

According to statistics gathered by youth sports organizations, “Up to 50 million kids play youth sports in America, and 73 percent of those who begin playing a sport quit before they turn 13” (Binns). The children could have quit because they did not like the disappointment of losing, or because they are exhausted from their parents pushing them too hard. But parents have their reasons for pushing their children into sports. “Studies show that kids who play sports are less likely to become obese, abuse drugs or alcohol or to perform poorly in school” (McCormick). If children are not active, then they will most likely become overweight, and if they have nothing to do in their pastime, they may turn to drugs and alcohol, which usually leads to a decrease in grades in school.
These types of sports teaches athletes to hold their composure and be mature when there is conflict, and will use these techniques later in life in numerous group settings. As athletes gain their social skills their cognitive intuition starts to kick in. Participating in sports also helps with athletes thought process. For instance in sports there are key strategies athletes need to comprehend in order to do well in their sport, so athletes are involved physically and mentally. The people believe that “ the coach’s role is to focus on sportsmanship, effort, and excellence “. So that leaves a huge job for the athletes like football and basketball players to memorize the plays that the coaches strategized for them.
