Task 2 Question: What impact is the expansion of Netflix and other streaming services likely to have on Australian society? Nowadays, every house has a television time where the entire family sits down together to watch their favorite shows on the TV. With the growing demand of the Internet, we now have a lot of different options on how and where to watch our selected shows. There are streaming services like Netflix, Quickflix, Presto, and Stan and other services which allow viewers to pay a certain amount of money every month and watch their desired shows. These days Netflix is the hot buzz in Australia replacing the local content of TV. What changes these SVOD (streaming videos on demand) have brought to the media? The consequences on the society are little doubtful. As the subscription on demand is becoming the new black, it’s killing the local media at some extent. Everyone is getting drawn towards the fictional world losing touch with the reality. People are cutting their outdoor activities just to catch up their watched serial. Even in office hours people are utilizing their short breaks for Netflix which is in turn is affecting their time and productivity too. Children are less interested in playing becoming couch potatoes watching video clips all the time. There is no more excitement for first day first show; rather people are waiting for the movies to release on the streaming sites. The video on demand subscriptions are having a massive effect not only on the Australian society but on the internet system as well. The Universities students are too watching Netflix on campus, as it is an easy distraction for their monotonous classes. The internet speed is getting affected resulting in much slower speed especially during the evenings. A report claimed nearly 50% of increase in Australian network i.e. from 30gbps to 45gpbs and jumping to even more. According to media consumer survey (2014) by Deloitte-only 29% of Australians of surveyors are contented with the speed of their internet and the rest are willing to pay more for faster
Many of the technological advancements in entertainment helped people live a much happier and exciting life. The television was wanted by almost every average American family in this decade and overwhelmed millions of baby-boomer children who’s relationship with TV has influenced the United States’ culture and politics. The Australian television and media have become americanised through the influence of American media and television programs in Australia.
The first excuse is economics. The business of TV is ruled by a simple declaration: Get the audience the advertisers want. The consequence is that major networks forgo the mass ...
Canadian television viewers were formerly very passive consumers (Miller, 2010), whom, without government intervention and regulations, would see that Canadian television programming would move to a United States based market. "There has been over half a century of battling what is perceived as “an ideological misrecognition whereby Canadians mistake American television for what they really like while simultaneously neglecting the Canadian television that they ought to like” (Miller, 2010, p.39). Miller’s media studies II (2010) sees audiences gain more power and awareness, but it wasn’t until that audiences’ recent shift towards aligning with Miller’s media studies III category, that set a landscape that is ready to see Canadian television truly flourish. This can be seen through recent polling, done by the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television, and Radio Artists (ACTRA), the Canadian Film and Television Production Association (CFTPA),, the Directors Guild of Canada (DGC), and the Writers Guild of Canada (WGC) (2008), “that not only is it important to Canadians to have access to Canadian programming that distinguishes itself from foreign programs, (but) they also want to be able to choose programming that reflects national
Reed Hastings, co-founder of Netflix headquartered in Los Gatos, CA, began the company’s operations in 1997 after receiving an enormous late charge from a movie rental he returned long overdue. However, Hastings had the desire to be different than traditional movie outlets; whereas, customers had to drive to the location, pay a certain amount for each movie they rented, and were given a deadline in which to return the movie. Instead of using a method established by other video markets “to attract customers to a retail location, Netflix offered home delivery of DVDs through the mail” which eventually led to a booming business towards streaming forms of entertainment (Shih, Kaufman, & Spinola, 2009, p. 3). Today, Netflix exists along with several competitors; however, offers the most streaming content available for viewing, and continues to grow its subscriber base both domestically and globally. Although, direct and indirect competitors, acquisition costs, and several barriers present a financial threat for Netflix, the company has managed to grow with the acclamation of partnerships, expand to international territories, and vastly increase its price in shares of stock.
The exponential growth of the internet traffic has further asserted the need for high download and upload speed requirement for broadband. The entire residential population in the country is in need of high broadband rates. The main reason why US is lagging in broadband speed and pricing is not because of the technology but because
Marshall McLuhan was a Canadian scholar who had an area of focus in medium theory. His idea that “the medium is the message” is his most famous. Since his death in 1980, technology has advanced considerably making the variety of today’s media increasingly vast compared to the media of his time (Wolf 2004). Nonetheless, his theories can still apply to modern media. Netflix, a provider of on demand Internet media, specifically movies and televisions shows, is one of these new media. His theory of hot and cold media can apply to it, where Netflix as a hot medium, if not used sensibly, can affect one’s perception of the world negatively.
The best part for the consumer is that similar to Netflix, you can engage in a free 2 month trial before you commit to a monthly subscription. This helps consumers continue to evaluate in order to make sure this is the best service to satisfy their need. Also, subscriptions are monthly and can be cancelled at any
Netflix, The American Online On-Demand Video Streaming Giant crossed the border into Canada on September 22nd of 2010 looking to capitalize on the largely untapped online TV and Movie streaming market. While Netflix Canada, for the moment, will not be offering its flat rate online DVD-video and Blu-ray Disc rental service as in the United States, it is bringing a top quality video streaming service to Canadians...but will it be enough to change the way we rent, buy and watch our favorite TV episodes and Movies? When I first heard that Netflix was coming to Canada, I was pretty excited. I watch a lot of movies, mostly on my laptop after everyone else has gone to bed, and the concept of being able to watch any number of movies online at any
“"[If] someone is just watching TV all the time, primarily to kill time and as an excuse not to socialize, it could be a sign that he or she is suffering from loneliness, anxiety or depression," Adding that binge-watching could be a way for people to avoid or escape unpleasant realities in their lives. The way people handle what is going on in their lives differently, humans cope from different events in their lives in ways that could harm them in the long run. Netflix is not necessarily an unacceptable concept, but it can and needs to be fixed. Binge watching can be a harmful addiction, this can lead to many other addictions and side
Streaming video content over the internet continues to grow in popularity with consumers for a variety of reasons, including the widespread availability of high speed internet, attractive video content, easy to use video streaming devices and the rising cost of cable television service. Some consumers use streaming video to enhance or supplement the typical offerings available from their local cable provider. Others take a more extreme approach and use streaming video as a means to eliminate the need for a cable television subscription altogether. Presently consumers cancelling their cable TV subscriptions are still considered a minority of all subscribers; nevertheless their steadily increasing numbers have earned the moniker of “cord cutters.” Those looking to ditch cable TV can also find a growing number of online resources that will ease their transition to cheaper online television viewing.

Documentaries have a significant impact on today's generation; no one wants to watch T.V because everyone can just use their laptops, Ipads or phones to entertain themselves. Netflix is one of the most popular entertainment sites used today for movies, T.V series, and documentaries. Statistics show that more than 5.2 million Canadian are paying for Netflix monthly, but that's just Canada's statistics, Netflix is watched worldwide with the rate of 93.8 million subscriptions. Majority of the audience watching Netflix documentaries are youth audience from ages 12-20 and adult audience from ages 30-50. Both these viewers watch documentaries based on educational purposes in which they find best in their interest.
The 21st century has brought with it many innovative forms of technology that modernize the way we watch TV and films. Blockbuster is replaced with Netflix, advertisements are replaced with product placements and television is now on demand. This generation wants speed and efficiency when it comes to entertainment, which is why in this essay I will outline the positive outcomes of convergence and digitization in film and TV. Convergence is how institutions, audiences, and technology change in time, where as digitization is the actual process of converting analog information into a digital format (Evans, 2011). The media industry has definitely come a long way from small, pixelated black and white screens, adjusting bunny ears to get a better
Not only is there a sense of globalisation in the things we watch but also in the way we watch them. For example, digital television has become such a part of everyday life for the majority of UK viewers that many don’t even know they have it. The total number of households in the UK with digital television now stands at 15,715,178. We are now able to watch the same channels as people at the other side of the world, thanks to digital television. We have so much choice that we, at times, don’t know what to do with all of it. It has the availability to hold around 999 channels ranging from BBC channels to children’s cartoon channels, from DIY shows to adult content channels; it is all available to us.
