At University of Albany, in New York, they offer a free college tuition. Sounds great right? A free college, education, degree, and be able to get a job when your done. What could be better than that? There is a catch though. You have to stay in NY for four years after you graduate. If not, you will have to pay the tuition to the college. Would you think that this is a good arrangement? I would think that this wouldn't last for very long.
First of all, when you graduate you are usually looking for a job in what you major in. Yes, you can find good jobs in New York, but would you want to stay in NY for four more years? According to TweenTribune, they have interviewed potential students that would like to go there. One potential students stated that, "I don't know how much I like feeling confined, even to staying in the state for four more years," said Bobby Rickard. He is an 18-year-old freshman. He is from Brewster. Rickard has not yet decided his major. "I don't know what life will have for me.” And who really does know that is in store for their future. They can’t help if they get a great

job offer in another state. Also, some people think that they have a system that is not fair to students.
They should have to choice to go or stay. TweenTribune also had Sara Goldrick-Rab is a Temple University professor say that, "It's absolutely bait and switch," she said. "You entice people with something they really, really need and then you penalize them if they can't find a decent job and have to leave.” She also says that it is not fair to the students who do not read the fine print at the bottom of the paper, and they won’t know what to expect. They only have very certain cases in which they would make an exception. If you were to be drafted into the military, they would allow you to drop out and go serve without having to pay the fee. The other exception is if they leave the program only for an advanced degree. Although you will have to come back to the sate and live for the four
years. Other people may disagree with this. They may think that what is a couple more years in New York going to hurt? To them, they think that this is a great opportunity to be able to learn and not have to pay for it. Just having this opportunity is an honor anyway. Who would want to leave New York when you can learn for free, live and explore, and get a job. Also in TweenTribune, it says how one student loves it. It says, “Ashley Mendez, 18, a journalism and communications major, said the proposal is a fair compromise. Many residents will stay anyway, she said. "I'm a New Yorker. I wouldn't leave the state for anything," Mendez said.” She believes that this is a chance of a life time and no one should pass this up. In conclusion, I do not believe that the free tuition college in New York will live for too much longer. Students and even professors think that it is unfair that graduates will have to stay an additional four years. If they get a job offer outside the state within the four years, they will either have to pay the fee and take it, or they will will have to pass up the offer.
While most people want college to be free, the U.S. should not make tuition free for all citizens. There are a number of reasons like taxing families who already have it hard, quality in education, rationing, and if people see that they do not have to pay it may lower the value in which they won 't take school seriously. Tuition free college is impossible because at the end of the day someone will have to pay for all those students attending. For example, “In college I was invested, I was paying,” The former student said, “Once it entails a cost, it’s not easy to just say, Oh, let’s not go to class today. You’re just hurting yourself” (qtd, in Make College Affordable, but Not Free). Student who barely made it
As you can see, there are more drawbacks than benefits to free college tuition once you look past the surface of it. Like I said before, at a glance, it seems perfect, flawless. However, take a deeper look and see all of the things that would need to change in order to sustain nationwide tuition-free higher education. It is not as simple as it sounds, student debt may go down, but how many other people are we putting in debt to make up for the loss of funding going to schools through the tuition that we have
According to Trade Schools, Colleges and Universities “Many of America's top-performing high school students never apply to the most challenging colleges and universities even though they have the ability to succeed at them. They often come from minority and low-income households and end up pursuing more affordable, less-selective schools instead.” College can be a burden to many students in a variety of different ways, but the most common reason is due to funds. Making college free for students will help this problem by increasing jobs in the work industry that require degrees, they should be affordable to all people at all cost, as well as the funds should be completely cut off because it would increase jobs and help America's economy grow.
The free community college idea sounds appealing, but more time and government money should be spent on making university tuitions lower because the community colleges are already less expensive and give support to those who are not financially stable.
dropout, due to lack of effort, B. finish with an associate’s degree and limit their choices in a job compared, or C. continue after a community college and further their degree at a university. Yet, the third reason is the reason that makes the proposal questionable as to whether it is really a need or if it’s a want by the people that want money handed to them to help their future. If people can afford two more years of college after a community college, or they have scholarships to help them pay for the following two years, then why can they not afford a community college that can be less than a thousand dollars to attend to? The proposal seems to be something that is not totally needed to be one more thing that raises taxes, as there are scholarships for various cases and made to be affordable to further an education after high
Their claim might be that in having free-tuition colleges and universities the education system will lose its value on students. Whereas, knowing that students are paying for class course they are more focused and determined. They don 't want their money to be a waste. And I agree, however there are other ways to approach this. In Germany one still has to pay for their education, but with a small tuition fee and their own living expenses. In fact, international students at Germany have to pay an annual of approximately $6,300 in tuition and living expenses where 90 percent goes to paying one’s living expenses and the other 10 percent goes into university fees. After all in the U.S, the average annual cost for attending college is about $35,000 where about only 30 percent of that money goes to living expenses; compare that to the 90 percent in Germany. We should consider lowering the prices of tuition where students still feel the need to focus since after all they are still paying for the college classes. The ultimate goal is not to be free-tuition but to lower it just enough that individuals who want to pursue a career will be
Some of these programs that are options for students may require that student to move to another city or even another country. This option would work well for someone who is able to move, but what about someone who cannot leave where they currently live. These graduates may not want to leave because of family for example. Another problem with these programs is that the student with loan debt must fully comp...
Last issue is, what about the kids who are actually paying the full tuition or partial tuition to go there, where is their money going? The whole thing is college athletes have been getting played since before I was born and it needs to stop soon. It’s just a loose loose situation for student athletes right now and that is no fun. Paying them would make their lives way easier and keep them out of trouble.
Going to college has been getting more expensive every year since colleges started. Going to college gives a student a chance to find a career in their major of choice. The only problem is that it isn’t always guaranteed. There are millions of graduated students that can’t find jobs in their major. Most of those students have student loans that they still owe and can’t afford to pay off. The average student with student loans owes over $25,000 and that doesn’t include all that interest that piles up every month. The United States should make college tuition free for everyone that has a high school degree. That can be achieved by making colleges give free tuition, changing the way interest piles up, and by lowering the military budget.
There are so many students who would extremely grateful to attend any four year institution but can’t because of the lack of funds. College life can be very stressful, and the process can is very frustrating to most students the first two years. When the cost of college tuition is compared to the 21 century financial economy the cost does not make sense, because for a middle-class family it is impossible to afford sending their child to any four-year institution. It hard for students to graduate with the stress to pay-off hundreds and thousands of dollars in loans. Going to college is stressful enough without the need to worry about how we’re going to pay for it and what other costs will continue to rise with getting a degree afterwards. With the current increase of unemployment rate and the thought of going to college seems like a farfetched goal. Many people choice not to attend a four year institution, because they did receive a scholarship or enough government funding. Having a college background is very important for professional growth, it will eventually limit career opportunities. My stand point is, you may not leave college doing the same thing you began with but the life experience is endless. College experience not only gives knowledge that builds you into a better person by giving a broader erosion. With the cost of tuition increasing will hurt our generation, by causing physical and mental stress but in the end it will all pay off. Not all colleges are for the blame; some of the blame is our economy and other factors play a big roll. As students we need to be aware of all our resources offered, such as Pell Grants, and government scholarships. For example, the some states will pay for a student’s college if they graduate high school with a GPA of 3.5 or higher. There are many states that are willing to pay for all or some of college tuition only if students are willing to use
Although free college may close the gap between people going to college and people not going to college, it will lead to bigger problems in the long run. People who are graduating high school that are ready to go to college, and live on their own should pay for college by themselves. Paying for college out of your own pocket rather than have the money for college handed to you will teach people how to grow up, help with skills that they will need during their later years of adulthood, and by paying for college on their own it might help them feel more grateful towards their accomplishments.
For most young Americans, college has always been preached to them as being a vital part to their success in the adult world; but as they reach this educative rite of passage many find they must take out inflated loans, work part time jobs, or even become dissuaded entirely due to the exorbitant costs of higher education. We must forsake this current antiquated system in favor of government subsidized tuition. Therefore, college education must be free because of its benefit to the economy, creation of equal opportunity, and the resolution of the student loan crisis.
Some students may have dreams that do not require a college degree, but parents may push to get a degree to fall back on incase their dreams fail. This brings a disinterest to the student in college and can cause them to do poorly in classes. This can hurt the student if they decide to change their mind down the road and try college again. Some students just need time off to truly think about what they want to do with their life, but many people think you have to go to college right out of high school. While getting it done quickly can be a good thing, it is also a good idea to wait if you truly do not know what you want to do with your life. You may feel that you are wasting your time there if you are not even sure that you are studying for something you want to do for the rest of your
Fees and loans are too big of a load for young people to carry. A lot of students drop out do to the pressure of having to worry about all the loans they have to pay back after they are done with college. This should not be an issue to the student. According Iatham Emmmons, “Even worse, a large portion of students never receive funding at all due to the multitude of stipulations that must be adhered to in order to qualify for assistance. A major flaw in the current federal educational assistance programs is that the students’ parents’ income is used to calculate financial need” (Emmons 3). Even citizens who try to get help by applying for funding never end up getting it because they do not meet the needs required for the funding. Education should be p...
To give people more employment opportunities, colleges should offer free tuition. A free tuition could be a benefit for students and graduates can make more money. To get all of the benefits and to fulfill people’s needs, people should be educated. All colleges give free tuition for the students who are looking for college but can’t afford college tuition. Having free tuition at many colleges is a benefit to students.
