Racism. In How to Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee uses the motif of Mockingbird to symbolize people that are innocent, that have been touched by the evils of society. One of these characters in Boo Radley. The motif Mockingbird represents prejudice and racism. In the story the underlying theme is racist injustice and the mockingbird is used to symbolize this.
During the story when Jem and Scout are given their air guns Atticus tells them “Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s gardens, don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird” Pg90 Ch10. Atticus says this to show that many characters are Mockingbirds. They were once innocent, but they have been touched by the evils of society. These characters are Boo Radley, Mayella Ewell, and Tom Robinson. This is said to show how prejudice and racism can destroy a community. Jem and Scout watch the case without their father Atticus knowing. In the case Atticus is trying to show that Mr. Ewell could have beaten up Mayella Ewell. Scout caught onto this and stated “it seemed to me , that Mr. Ewell could have beaten up Mayella.” p 178 chp 17. Atticus is trying to show that Tom Robinson could have not raped Mayella, and Mr. Ewell raped her. Tom Robinson and Mayella are the mockingbirds. Tom is a black man and Mayella is a white woman, it would be impossible for Tom to win. Tom cannot win because of the racial injustice that occurs in the south. Atticus knew that Tom was already a dead man and he knew that they would not win. He showed the people in the courtroom how there is an abundance of prejudice and that we need to overcome this.
