In the book entitled The First Days of School: How to be an Effective Teacher, Harry Wong (1998) writes, “An effective teacher manages a classroom; an ineffective teacher disciplines a classroom” (p. 170). The course, EDUC 3302: Motivation and Management provided hands-on, valuable material and methods for classroom management. The Classroom Management Plan (CMP) completed in this course, presented the ability to explore the ideals, theories, and strategies that have been taught. Our classroom, is a small culturally diverse community within our middle school with students who are from all socio-economic statuses, English Language Learners (ELLs) from Mexico and China, a Type 3 Underground gifted student, and those provided with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for various physical and mental disabilities: cystic fibrosis, dysgraphia, severe Attentions Deficit Hyper-Activity Disorder (ADHD), and moderate autism spectrum disorder. Our classroom culture opens our minds and our hearts through the many differences and provides us with unique experiences through our wide range of abilities, talents, and languages that challenges us as we encounter them day to day. In reflection, I found that I provided researched practices and differentiated methods to meet the needs of these students in development of my classroom management, specifically in its organization and implementation in CMP Part 2. I also discovered that I provided differentiated strategies toward maintenance of appropriate behavior, management of problematic behavior, creating classroom culture, and development of relationships between students and the student’s families (specifically within CMP Part 5 and our classroom

Classroom management is a necessary component for teachers to appreciate and apply to positively manage and adjust behavior within the learning environment. It is important that teachers develop a sound perceptive of significant theories that will result in enhanced teaching and practices within the class (Lyons, Ford & Slee, 2014). Goal Centred Theory, Cognitive Behavioural Theory and Assertive Discipline Theory are three prominent management theories that will endure analysis. Therefore, consolidating the main elements that underpin the theories will assist in developing positive practices of classroom management.
Culturally responsive teaching is very important in today’s day and age. Classrooms are filled with students from different backgrounds, races, and ethnicities. Teachers need to put into consideration those differences when building curriculum and creating a classroom atmosphere. Subcultures might also need to be considered when teaching, such as the culture of the disabled. The culture of students with disabilities is one that may appear within many classrooms due to the increase of students with disabilities. Teachers who are able to maintain a culturally responsive classroom and curriculum will provide ideal learning opportunities for all students and encourage them to succeed. (Darrow, 2013)
In my twelve years of teaching experience, one thing that most of my colleagues have struggled with at some point in their career has been classroom management. Classroom management is one many keys to instructional success. Unfortunately, many have left the teaching field due to lack of knowledge of classroom management best practices.
In today’s educational environment, all students expect to receive the same level of instruction from schools and all students must meet the same set of standards. Expectations for students with learning disabilities are the same as students without any learning difficulties. It is now unacceptable for schools or teachers to expect less from one segment of students because they have physical disabilities, learning disabilities, discipline problems, or come from poor backgrounds. Standardize testing has resulted in making every student count as much as their peers and the most positive impact has been seen with the lowest ability students. Schools have developed new approaches to reach these previously underserved students while maintaining passing scores for the whole student body. To ensure academic success, teachers employ a multi-strategy approach to develop students of differing abilities and backgrounds. Every student is different in what skills and experiences they bring to the classroom; their personality, background, and interests are as varied as the ways in which teachers can choose to instruct them. Differentiated instruction has been an effective method in which teachers can engage students of various backgrounds and achieve whole-class success. When using differentiated instruction, teachers develop lesson strategies for each student or groups of students that provide different avenues of learning but all avenues arrive at the same learning goal.
There are many challenges that teachers encounter when teaching children with learning disabilities, learners that are English language learners, or learners who are culturally and linguistically diverse. As a nation we are faced with the challenged that our schools are becoming more diverse. The majority of our schoolteachers are still predominately white females, but our student population is slowly changing. We are seeing more minority groups in our schools that are facing different challenges. The scary part of it all is that our teachers do not have the skills to accommodate those differences. “The nation’s changing school demographics are creating a demand for new teaching skills” (Utley, Obiakor, & Bakken 2011, pg. 5). It also involves adapting the school structure and culture to fit the needs of diverse students who come from different racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds. In order for this to occur, there needs to be a collaborative effort amongst school staff and the principle to ensure that every aspect of school life is in line with multicultural education. For example, the school curriculum, teaching materials, teaching strategies, and counseling programs all play important roles in creating a more inclusive environment. All effective educators need to find ways to motivate their students. The kids that fill our classrooms have different strengths and weaknesses. It is critical that teachers recognize the strengths and weaknesses of their students so they can use the right classroom management strategies to motivate their kids. In this particular case, the student named Jodie is inattentive and uninterested and neither the teacher intern or classroom teacher have a clue how to handle this situation. Ms. Marcia Thomas, who is the young intern feels that Jodie is just a problem child that lacks motivation and there is nothing she can do for this particular student. Ms. Thomas and the lead teacher Ms. Egan both lack the needed classroom management strategies that are necessary to motivate and engage students in a positive learning environment.
There are many factors that play a role in the learning process for every human being. Race, religion, language, socioeconomics, gender, family structure, and disabilities can all affect the ways in which we learn. Educators must take special measures in the delivery of classroom instruction to celebrate the learning and cultural differences of each of their students. As communities and schools continue to grow in diversity, teachers are searching for effective educational programs to accommodate the various learning styles of each student while promoting acceptance of cultural differences throughout the classroom. It no longer suffices to plan educational experiences only for middle-or upper class white learners and then expect students of other social classes and cultures to change perspectives on motivation and competition, learning styles, and attitudes and values that their homes and families have instilled in them (Manning & Baruth, 2009).
Culture is a powerful influence plays a big role in our interactions. Culture may also impact parenting style and a developing child. Having a strong sense of their own cultural history and the traditions associated with it helps children build a positive cultural identity for themselves. This also supports children’s sense of belonging and, by extension, their mental health and wellbeing. This class is crucial in understanding and working well parents, staff, and children. An effective educator understands how students’ cultures affect their perceptions, self-esteem, values, classroom behavior, and learning. As director, I need to use that understanding to help my students and staff feel welcomed, affirmed, respected, and valued. One way that I can do this is by using multicultural literature, especially children’s literature, to honor students’ culture and foster cross-cultural understanding. If cultural differences are not understood by teachers and management, it can lead to miscommunication and misunderstandings on both sides. It will be my job to do all I can to overcome both language and cultural differences to ensure a positive learning environment for

This I Believe Philosophy statement will include my thoughts and beliefs about classroom management with comparison to other theorists’ models. The major theorists that will be mentioned are Barbara Coloroso, Linda Albert, and Lee & Marlene Canter. I highly agree with the Canter’s and Coloroso’s models of classroom management because it best fits my personality as an individual teacher. I believe that an affective classroom management plan is first practiced and then modeled for improvements. My ultimate goal for my Classroom Management Plan is to model self-discipline by teaching it through my daily actions so that students may be able to self-manage themselves accordingly.
“Classroom management deals with how things are done. Discipline deals with how people behave.” (Marshall, 2011) The most important thing about classroom management is control. A teacher must have control to be successful. When a teacher losses control, students become bored, disinterested, and restless, which often causes behavior problems. Avoid misbehavior by setting classroom rules early in the year. These guidelines allow students to know the expectations the teacher has for them and the consequences of not following the rules. Never continue instruction when rules are broken, this cause total loss of control, which leads to behavior problems.
I believe Classroom Management is the main component in the educational setting. I believe if students are in a safe environment, then learning can take place. This doesn’t mean punishing behavior problems but rather a combination of setting the tone in a class, preventing behavior problems with interesting and engaging curriculums and effectively including all students in the classroom so that their needs are met. Having the right environment for all students to learn is my major goal of implementing good classroom management--without it the students would not be able to learn.
