My Leadership Philosophy
In relaying my leadership philosophy to you, I can demonstrate what drives not only my actions as a leader, but also as a person. In this philosophy, I will outline the expectations and standards I have for you and myself. My leadership philosophy centers around the morals, beliefs, and values I hold in the highest regard. These morals, beliefs, and values fall in line with those the Army provides via its various creeds and guidelines by which each Soldier should live, including the NCO Creed and the Army Values.
The opening of the NCO Creed captures a main, driving force in my leadership philosophy, “No one is more professional than I.” Being a consummate professional encompasses many of the qualities I feel each Soldier should possess, such as respect, fairness, and dedication. In my mind, professionals, without fail, demonstrate these qualities in all their interactions with others, regardless of rank and irrespective of their personal feelings toward that person. I promise to exemplify the qualities of a true professional; treating everyone with the utmost respect, being fair in all my judgements, and ensuring dedication to care for my Soldiers.

Integrity means always doing the right thing, even when no one is watching. This is important to me because, a Soldier who possess integrity, I believe, possesses all the Army Values. Demonstrating integrity in all actions no matter how important, or seemingly trivial, shows me, as a leader that I can rely on that Soldier to do the right thing no matter the situation. In order to better understand my leadership philosophy, you must first understand who I am. I spent 8 years active duty in the Marine Corps. Afterwards, I did a multitude of different civilian jobs while pursuing my Bachelor of Science Degree in Organizational Management and Leadership from Friends University. I have been married for almost 20 years and have two awesome boys, ages 1 and 5. I think family is imperative in keeping Soldiers grounded and in a good state of mental health.
Integrity can be described to who a person is when no one is watching. A person with integrity does the right thing even when they are alone and they know no one else is around. An example in the Marine Corps would be standing a post by yourself. Integrity is a core value, a key aspect, of the Army Values. Integrity of the soldier is looked upon highly, and is a valuable asset in any field of the army. Twenty four seven, meaning every hour of every day, a soldier should strive for integrity. Having integrity means your are trustworthy, and being trustworthy means that your NCO can depend on you to do the right thing at all times.
As our forefathers before us stated, ‘‘No one is more professional than I. I am a Noncommissioned Officer, a leader of soldiers. As a Noncommissioned Officer, I realize that I am a member of a time honored corps, which is known as “The Backbone of the Army (“The NCO Creed written by SFC Earle Brigham and Jimmie Jakes Sr”). These words to the Noncommissioned Officer should inspire us to the fullest with pride, honor, and integrity. The NCO creed should mean much more than just words whenever we attend an NCO’s school.
The word leadership can mean many things if you were to ask individual people to define it. Some may say, “Oh that’s the person in charge”, others may argue that leadership is a “position of power”. I define leadership as the person that others look to in times of crisis and need that they aspire to follow. A leader is always looking for meaningful ways to take care of those around them, sometimes with discipline and others with a calm voice of reason. Throughout my career I have had many different levels of leadership from junior people that would lend a helping hand to senior leaders that always had my back and the answers to tough questions. The most influential person in my career was a First Class Petty Officer when I was fresh out of school and new to the ship. I had never been to sea and was excited to learn. The next three years were some of the best years of my career. Each day we would do nearly everything together when it came to our equipment, we would troubleshoot complex equipment problems sometimes late
Integrity to me means going above and beyond with everything I do. I think this will fuel good grades and completion of assignments. Having good integrity also came with some confidence, because I had to do more and go outside of the crowd. I did and do more than everyone else, that made me fell a lot more confident about my actions. Confidence has pushed me to make suggestions that I otherwise wouldn't.

I have recited a creed daily that embodies what makes an NCO. I have lived by that creed and always placed the needs of my soldiers above my own. I have sacrificed in times when I should not have. I have made sure those around me are better off than myself whenever I was able. What I mean with these hollow words, what I hope rings true from the message I am trying to convey, is that I have LIVED with integrity. I have EMBODIED integrity, even when it meant it would harm me; because no one is more professional than I.

Developing a personal philosophy of leadership is essential for every leader to establish prior to becoming a leader. A leader should be aware of their strengths and weaknesses and then develop a philosophy that would best compliment that leader’s personality traits and strengths as a person. Leaders need to have their personal philosophy established prior to becoming a leader because once you are in a position of leadership it is time to lead others, not time to determine what philosophy would be best used to lead. I truly believe that a personal philosophy of leadership should be fluid as the leader continues to learn about leadership and people throughout the leader’s career but the four core principles of integrity, ethics, positive attitude and honesty must remain constant.
My followers should know that I will always be a man of such integrity, and also know that, while under my command, they shall carry themselves in a similar manner, especially while representing our unit, the Coast Guard, and the United States of America
Integrity is how somebody lives their life. In this life we live, we face choices every day that only we can answer. We dictate how we run our own lives, and they way we run them defines us. Integrity is doing the right thing versus the wrong thing. People, if nothing else, can always have their pride, their integrity. It is something that means a lot to some people and then nothing to others. The ones who value their integrity highly are the good people in this world, and the opposite is true for those who do not value their integrity.
The second characteristic of professionalism is responsibility. General responsibility creates the moral responsibility of marines and helps us understand the set of values which guide us. In addition, however, marines must also possess the values of other human beings and question service to a society which does not respect these values. These values include justice, common courtesy, human dignity and humbleness. A government which does not respect these values is illegitimate and cannot be said to serve the society it directs. In the case of United States marines, the values of the United States must be examined in the context of the military profession. The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution provide clear statements of these values and Ethics. Ethics are standards by which one should act based on values. Values are core beliefs such as honor, courage, and commitment that motivate attitudes and actions. Not all values...
Integrity is the quality of being honest. When you are honest about something or a certain situation you are considered a person of integrity. Also when you have integrity you have strong moral principles. When you have strong moral principles you know what is right and what is wrong. “Having integrity means doing the right thing in a reliable way. It's a personality trait that we admire, since it means a person has a moral compass that doesn't waver. It literally means having "wholeness" of character, just as an integer is a "whole number" with no fractions.” Furthermore, having integrity is a quality that many strive to have because it often means that you are a good person.
Leadership is an important part of society, we must have leaders within our society in order for it to function, as teachers we are expected daily to be leaders to our students, their parents, and even the teachers around us. Some believe that leadership is a learned trait and others believe it’s a trait that we are born with, but the way that we see leadership should be multidimensional, with different levels and different approaches. For me leadership is based on the persons traits, skills, the ability to be authentic and the ability to be a servant while leading always thinking about others. Which all bring me to the four theories that I connect with the trait approach, skills approach, authentic and servant leadership theories. It is the leader that helps prioritize activities and direct people’s thought process in the right direction. They are the ones who have the ability to bring the group together as a whole. Because of this, not anyone can be a leader. Only people with certain qualities and abilities are able to fill this role. So what makes a good leader?
