POW 7: Knitting for a Cause Ms KC is at it again. Her knitting club is making a table runner* to rae o as a fundraiser. The table runner will be 2 feet wide and 20 feet long. Members of the club are each making 1 foot by 2 feet rectangles to put together to make the runner. *A table runner is a narrow length of cloth laid on top of tablecloths or on a bare table. Table runners are used in a variety of ways: Laid down the center of the table for decoration, laid across the table to dene seating, or used to carry out a theme. You might think that it is a snap to connect the rectangles. But there is more than one way to arrange the rectangles. For example there are three arrangements of rectangles that form a 3 foot long runner. Note that the

... attempts to change the way Mama and Maggie perceive tradition by using the quilts as a wall display. Mama refuses to allow it, Dee was offered the quilts when she was in college and didn’t want them at that time. Mama gives the quilts to Maggie as her wedding gift to be used every day as they were intended, knowing how much Maggie appreciates them. I agree with Mama and Maggie for keeping family memories and objects in daily use. It is important to maintain your family history in your everyday life to preserve those special memories.
To begin with, a quilt is defined as a “coverlet made of scrapes and fragments stitched together to form a pattern” (Webster). The quilt in “Everyday Use” was made by Grandma Dee, Big Dee, and Mama from scraps of dresses and shirts and is part of Grandpa’s Civil War uniform. It is filled with memories and was hand stitched by the family. Mama suggests that Dee take other ones, but Dee rejects the offer because they were “stitched by machine”(Walker, p.114) and the old ones were done by hand. Mama says that she had promised them to Maggie.
Quilts symbolize a family’s heritage. Maggie adheres the tradition by learning how to quilt from her grandmother and by sewing her own quilts. Maggie also puts her grandmother’s quilts into everyday use. Therefore, when Dee covets the family’s heirloom, wanting to take her grandmother’s hand-stitched quilts away for decoration, Mama gives the quilts to Maggie. Mama believes that Maggie will continually engage with and build upon the family’s history by using the quilts daily rather than distance herself from

Without the people and the activity, the scene around the Table is nothing out of the ordinary. In the basement of the Memorial Union there is an area of tables on the tile-floor where the Union Food Court meets the Recreation and Outing Center. The tall tables surrounded by stools are ignored as all the standard height tables have been taken over to form the Table. Generally we have about six tables, pushed into a formation that has evolved into a close area taking up as little space as possible. All the regular wooden chairs have also been commandeered for the Table, though when our numbers are high an occasional stool or otherwise non-matching gimp chair is added. For a while it seemed that the janitors had given up because in the past they had put the tables back in their original spots night. Of course, the next morning we moved them right back. At the beginning of this year the tables were left in place, but as of late the janitors have been putting them back. Recently the round tables returned which adds a completely new dimension to the table, since they perfectly fit in and over the square tables. The Table is positioned directly under a cold air vent adding its usual chill to the group, especially come winter. The unintelligibility of the music droning in the Rec and Outing Center is generally ignored, though a recognized song can bring comment and discussion.
I have always liked fiber and assorted yarn. I am like a child in a candy store whenever I go to the yarn store. The hanks of fiber arranged by color mesmerize me, calling for me to bring them home, to see what I will create with them. I love how the yarn store is organized by color and wool textures. They challenge me, taunting me, begging me to turn the colorful skein into a one of a kind handcrafted creation. Will this colorful skein of yarn become knotted to make an afghan, a sweater, socks or hats?
There are six diagonal lines. At one end there are circles on them giving the impression of three circular prongs. At the other end the same size lines have cross connecting lines consistent with two square prongs. These perceptions can violate our expectations for what is possible often to a delightful effect.
The ways lace is used today might surprise some of its creators. Lace hankies are used as curtains hanging from a ribbon or clothesline. Or they're used as decorative elements on pillows…or sewed together to form quilts or coverlets. Some use them to trim cabinets, adding a touch or elegance or softness.
My mother homeschools my two brothers, so every day they are able to wake up an hour or two after me. While I am preparing for a day full of dancing and academics they are in their beds snoring as loud as thunder during a disruptive downpour. My routine in the morning includes packing my dance bag for the appropriate classes I will be taking that day. If I have ballet that means I pack a black leotard, pink tights, and ballet shoes. For international into my bag go folklorico shoes with my leotard and black tights. Dress code for modern class is a black leotard, black tights, and socks. I always have trouble remembering to bring socks.

Making a career out of sewing is a simple task, since the majority of people have an attachment to the idea of items being customized to their personal preference. Sewing is making, repairing, or attaching cloth by stitching the seams together with a needle and thread by hand or by a sewing machine. Although a seamstress is the one who makes and repairs clothing, they also conduct individual clothes fittings, alterations, and repairs. The primitive, ancient form of sewing was practiced by early man more than 20,000 years ago and has evolved from hand sewing into mechanical sewing. The idea of sewing all began when someone decided to use needles, which came from iron, to stitch together animal skin for clothing and blankets (Eve 1).
Beside the classic, large tablecloths, table runners offer nice possibilities for the table decoration. Particularly nice: The runners are narrow and long and so does not disappear, as with a classic tablecloth, the whole table underneath. Usually, table runners are placed longitudinally and centrally on the table and serve as a basis for candles , flowers and other accessories.
