Irony has illustrated the theme of Chekhov’s “ The Brute” and Dahl’s “ Lamb to the Slaughter “ by utilizing common stereotypes and elements such as situational irony that display the theme. Regardless, in “Lamb to the Slaughter” , an irony is used to convey stereotypes by illustrating the theme of the story which is stereotypes are not always accurate. For an instance, in Dahl’s “ Lamb to the Slaughter” Mary Maloney is often seen as a gentle woman and nice to her husband, while she is 6 months pregnant, this makes people use common sense it could not have happened when Mary giggles” Probably right under our very noses… Mary Maloney began to giggle”(Dahl, Pg.18) . Thus, this contradicts what Mary is seen by others, therefore it unveils irony
to provide the theme that how simple minded people are, how common sense stops logic. However, in “ The Brute” Chekhov's uses the common stereotype to display irony to clarify the theme of how the way society thinks and simple minded it is. In the “ the Brute, Mr.Smirnov and Mrs.Popov quarrel against each other till “ A long kiss, Luka… “ (Chekhov's Pg. 108) . This demonstrates what fate is, even though it seems that they were going to be enemies for an eternity but eventually in surprise they both fell in love. Otherwise, in both stories, they contain a situational irony backed up related by common stereotype. A situational irony occurs when Mr.Smirnov says “ Well,um,Mr.Popov, I, um , I like you” unexpectedly, whereas when Mary Maloney murders her husband which is ironic that gives a twist. It illustrates belief and stereotype are just a myth and it will turn ironic in the end. Therefore, an irony can reflect the certain theme of a story ,by using stereotypes and situational irony to illustrate a theme.

By definition, irony is the expression of one’s meaning that typically signifies the opposite. Authors have scribed irony in their literature since before pen and paper existed because even ancient bards such as Homer discovered the power irony can bring to a good story. Khaled Hosseini, the author of the novel The Kite Runner, masterfully weaves intricate and delicate examples of irony to enrich the story. Irony plays a pivotal role in the novel to develop the plot, by creating suspense, the themes, by informing the reader, and the characters, by showing their personalities and unconscious motives.
There are so many examples of situational irony that is clear throughout these stories Mr. Mallard being dead, Mama finally realizes that Maggie deserves the quilts because she understands her heritage better than Dee, Mathilde finding out she worked her whole life for nothing, and when Mr. Graves tells Tessie that Eva draws with her husband's family, Tessie is angry. Dramatic irony is everywhere as well. Louise dies from the shock of seeing her husband who is supposed to be dead and when Dee never wanted anything to do with her heritage until somebody was impressed by it.
Susan Gable’s Trifles is focused on discovering the killer of a local farmer in the twentieth century. In this play the amount of irony is abundant and the irony always relates to solving the murder. The two types of irony that are most easily discerned in Trifles are verbal and situational irony. Irony is when an author uses words or a situation to convey the opposite of what they truly mean. Verbal irony is when a character says one thing but they mean the other. This can be seen in the way the men dismiss the women. Situational irony is when the setting is the opposite of what one would think it would be for what the play is. This is seen through the setting being in a kitchen and various other aspects of the
In each of these stories, it is used to show the reader how each protagonist is oblivious to their distorted perception of reality. In “Miss Brill,” the protagonist is not only a victim but also a perpetrator of making the judgement of others, “…there was something funny about… or even cupboards.” This is an example of irony due to the fact that the reader is clear as to how Miss Brill is being judged by others, and yet still she manages to judge others herself. Another good example of irony is Miss Brill’s fur, “Although it was so brilliantly fine--the blue sky powdered with gold and great spots of light like white wine splashed over the Jardins Publiques-- Miss Brill was glad that she had decided on her fur.” It is ironic that Miss Brill believes her fur is so “brilliantly fine”, due to the fact that she later on judges a woman with a fur toque who gets rejected by a man due to the fact that her toque is so ages. Yet, Miss Brill does not notice that by her saying, “the ermine toque turned, raised her hand as though she’d seen someone else, much nicer, just over there, and pattered away,” she is basically judging someone else based just off of the woman’s looks, while others continue to judge Miss Brill off of her appearance. The irony in each of these stories helps the reader understand each of the protagonist’s unawareness of their situation. Not only does the irony provide more information to the reader,

Irony has been a major component of major works of literature for centuries. By definition irony is “a figure of speech in which words are used in such a way that their intended meaning is different from the actual meaning of the words” (“Irony”). There are various forms of irony that authors use such as situational, dramatic, verbal irony, etc. Irony also plays a tremendous role in theme, author purpose, and reader interpretation. “Irony is not just Austen's characteristic mode of expression: It is her characteristic mode of thought. Austen's irony reflects a perfect understanding of all the ways the world is wretched and the belief that although you can't really fight it, you can at least separate yourself from it” (Collins). In other words, Jane Austen uses irony to portray her attitude of the society around her. She is also able to appeal to her audience by using irony in a comedic way. “Jane Austen is a comic writer and, therefore, t...
