Discrimination in Sports Does racism affect the athletic world in today’s society? This is a question that many people have asked themselves throughout history. Today’s sports are highly affected by racially influenced chants and exclusion because of skin tone. Soccer is a prime example of discrimination in today’s world. For instance, in a “ 2012 European match...between 300 and 500 croatian fans were involved in racial abuse”throwing bananas and making monkey noises at Italian striker, Mario Balotelli ( Telegraph Sport 1). This is an example of racism because passionate fans were mocking Balotelli for being african descent. President Jacob Zuma “has called on the world to give racism in sports a big red card” (Johannesburg 1) in South Africa. Mr.Zuma believes that “ the whole progressive humanity to frown upon racism in sports...and do everything humanly possible to put an end”(Johannesburg 1) to discrimination in any sports. There must be equal opportunities in sports regardless of color, race, and gender. In Mr.Zuma's quote “i have no doubt that we will defeat racism is sport. Sport contributes to social cohesion,” he is basically saying that in any sport there must be a unity between the players in which they must put aside their differences and play as one. Similarly to the Gambia's women football ambassadors reach out to girls and womens in urban and rural areas to participate in football and end gender discrimination.
