“Dominance, even the threat of it, is a form of dehumanization. It's the ugliest kind of power.” In the book Night written by Elie Wiesel there are many types of dehumanization such as: abuse, bad living conditions, and also stripping them of their names. Elie was stripped of his identity and his family. Elie faced so many hardships during the time of the Holocaust because of being dehumanized. One of the major forms of dehumanization in the book is abuse of the Jews. In the book Elie says, “Hungarian police used their rifle butts to strike old men and women, children crippled” (Wiesel 16). The police beat the Jews like they were animals. Hitting people who couldn’t walk fast because they were in pain and hungry. Elie was one of the victims of the beatings. …show more content…

Elie was very badly whipped, which dehumanized him more than he even could have imagined. Another form of dehumanization that the Jews faced was the bad living conditions that they had to live in. In the book Elie says, “Ghostly faces peek out from layers of clothes” (Wiesel 83). Jews don’t even look like humans anymore. They don’t look alive, they look like ghosts with just skin and bones because of the conditions they’ve had to live and suffer in. This also affected Elie, “...’Try to sleep. Gather your strength for the journey.’ It reminded me of my mother’s last recommendations in the ghetto. But I couldn’t fall asleep. My foot was on fire” (Wiesel 83). Not only did the conditions affect the other people in the camp, but it also affected Elie because he had been hurt. The last form of dehumanization the Germans used was stripping the Jews of their names. In the book it says, “A-7713” (Wiesel 42).
