One of the most important elements to anti-utopia is the one individual who, over time, wakes up and starts to understand how he or she is being controlled. Despite their eventual epiphany, the main protagonist displays compliance to or even ignorance to their overseeing power in the outset of the narrative. Many readers may ask why the subject does not recognize the evident citizen suppression devised by the ruling body when there are many instances revealing it. In the film The Truman Show, one man, Truman Burbank, is the star of a television show that requires him to be ignorant to his entrapment in civil prison of a company-generated town. A character named Christof, the show’s director, was asked why the beautifully orchestrated plan had
been succeeding. “We accept the reality of the world with which we are presented,” (“The Truman Show”). This quote perfectly describes a common problem even in today’s society; most people go along with the social normal. Despite that fact, this is what sets the dystopian protagonist apart from the rest; they do not follow this idea.

A society where there is no evil, no crime, and no errors. The Truman Show shows that different people have different ideas of utopia. Throughout his whole life everyone around Truman was controlled by Christof, so that Christof could create a perfect society, or utopia, for Truman. Everything Truman did was tracked so that Christof could fix anything out of place. His utopia was a place where everything was perfect, clean, and essentially just stereotypical, so he made that happen for Truman. However Truman’s idea of utopia didn’t click with Christof’s, so therefore it wasn’t true utopia. Truman then attempted to escape from Christof’s trap to get closer to his utopia. Truman’s idea of utopia was freedom to do what he wanted, but Christof ended any element of that. This shows that utopia isn’t entirely possible and that different people have different utopias, and since utopia means perfect society, it can’t happen as society is people living
“The Truman Show” directed by Peter Weir is a movie depicting Truman Burbank, the main character, played by Jim Carrey who does not realize his every move from birth is being captured by hidden cameras as part of a 24/7 television show. Christof, the creator of the show, literally controls Truman’s world and mind which essentially has given him a false sense of reality. “The Truman Show” is a creation myth. “Creation myths are stories about the creation or re-creation of the cosmos, the world, the gods, and man.” (Dr. Gill, Canvas) It will now be explained how “The Truman Show” resembles a creation myth.
The Allegory of the Cave has many parallels with The Truman Show. Initially, Truman is trapped in his own “cave”; a film set or fictional island known as Seahaven. Truman’s journey or ascension into the real world and into knowledge is similar to that of Plato’s cave dweller. In this paper, I will discuss these similarities along with the very intent of both of these works whose purpose is for us to question our own reality.
Nineteen Eighty-Four describes a world where the most obvious paradox is seen as a commonplace. At least it appears so to the people living in Airstrip One (the former United Kingdom). Winston Smith is one of these citizens who survive on shortages of food and rations of Victory Gin. He believes that his life is being improved day by day even though the reality is the absolute opposite. He is a diligent worker on the Ministry of Truth where he enjoys his job of rewriting the past. One day, however, he decides to start writing a journal. This simple act is already considered as a death crime – the so called “thoughtcrime”. By just thinking against the Party that rules the society, he conspires against it and is considered as a criminal who should be converted to accept the truth that only the Party is right. He should truly love only the Big Brother – an icon and the dictator of the totalitarian Oceania. He finds a place where he believes he can secretly commit his crime of independent creative thinking. He needs to take this precaution because everyone is under a complete surveillance by the authorities through “telescreens” in their households. The phrase “Big Brother is watching you” constantly reminds the people of this through the propaganda system in this state.

You might not see anyone, but the eyes of a stranger could be gazing down on you. In Foucault's "Panopticism," a new paradigm of discipline is introduced, surveillance. No one dares to break the law, or do anything erroneous for that matter, in fear that they are being watched. This idea of someone watching your every move compels you to obey. This is why the idea of Panopticism is such an efficient form of discipline. The Panopticon is the ideal example of Panopticism, which is a tool for surveillance that we are introduced to in “Panopticism.” Kurt Vonnegut's "Harrison Bergeron," has taken the idea of surveillance one step further. The government not only observes everyone, but has complete control over society. The citizens of the United States cannot even think for themselves without being interrupted by the government. They are prisoners in their own minds and bodies. The ideals of “Panopticism” have been implemented to the fullest on society in Vonnegut’s "Harrison Bergeron," through physical and mental handicaps.
Much can happen in a matter of minutes; a man can go from thinking he is happy to thinking his life is falling apart, or can change from hating someone to loving them. These experiences sound outlandish, but they happened to Guy Montag, the main character in Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, and Winston Smith, the main character in George Orwell’s 1984. These two dystopian novels are about the characters discovering major problems in their societies, and then trying to fix them. Montag lives in a society where television controls people’s lives and books have become illegal. On the other hand Smith lives in Oceania, a territory led by a totalitarian regime. This regime is headed by Big Brother and is referred to as the Party. By examining Fahrenheit 451 and 1984, it is seen, not only through the dehumanized nature of society, but also through the theme of lies and manipulation that both Orwell and Bradbury wish to warn of a horrifying future society.
Throughout the world, failures seem to occur all around. Whether it be in the form of losing oneself or losing the people around the individual, many failures commonly occurs with the accumulation of power. In George Orwell’s dystopian novel, 1984, Winston Smith is a low-ranking government official under the oppressive reign of his leaders, Big Brother. He is just one example of the many characters in written works that will eventually be defeated in one way or another. In British literature, it has become evident that characters affected by tyrannies have ultimately experienced loneliness, paranoia, and defeat.
Psychological manipulation the Party uses on the citizens is one of the first themes Orwell exposes in this dystopian society. The Party maintains this manipulation by constantly overwhelming citizens with useless information and propaganda. And when memory failed and written records were falsified—when that happened, the claim of the Party to have improved the conditions of human life had got to be accepted, because there did not exist, and never again could exist, any standard against which it could be tested. (Orwell 82) Winston Smith, the protagonist, is having a frustrating conversation with an old man about life before the Revolution.

In 1984, George Orwell explores the many facets of a negative utopia. Orwell seems to focus on the measures that the government takes to maintain a public of plebeians who have no personality or identity and believe that they are not unique individuals, but instead are part of a greater senseless mob of people who constantly work for a hostile and oppressive government which is involved in incessant wars. You’re sitting alone in the café drinking your coffee and reading the newspaper. You see out of the corner of your eye a little girl sitting with her mom at the table nearby. You keep glancing over and you notice the little girl is staring you down. No matter what you do she continues to watch your every move. You wonder how long she has been sitting there and why she is gazing at you. You are being watched just like the people Michel Foucault describes, people who are simply being under constant surveillance. Foucault's work, "Panopticism," features a central control tower from which all inhabitants are watched while in their surrounding glass-walled cells. The Panopticon creates an atmosphere in which the inhabitants never know whether or not they are being watched forcing them to assume that they are at all times. With this mindset, "the exercise of power may be supervised by society as a whole" (Foucault). In other words, the people control their actions and take care of themselves appropriately just on the fact that they think they are being watched. "In appearance, [panopticism] is merely the solution of a technical problem; but, through it, a whole type of society emerges" (Foucault). The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton portrays a society that functions much like the Panopticon. Newland Archer and his fellow New Yorkers are part of a very close knit group of people. On the surface, The Truman Show is an entertaining drama of a heartless human experiment. But if you look a bit deeper many thought-provoking questions arise: What is freedom? Are you still free if you are being manipulated and controlled by others? How do you become truly free? As the main character, Truman Burbank, confronts these questions, the writers invite the viewer to ponder the meaning of freedom, the effects of manipulation and the steps to discovering true freedom.
First, Utopian Thought argues that “Social perfection is an illusive ideal…perfection will never be attained; it is only possible to work toward it” (Hertzler 307). Rulers over utopias believe their ideas are perfect; however, they are only a passing thought of that time. Eventually, another social perfection will rise to the top, and then another. Not one ideal will endure through time as societies increase their knowledge and reason (Hertzler 308). Hertzler claims utopias alienate themselves from the world to take full advantage of the intellect that the rest of society cannot understand (Hertzler 310) because utopias are based entirely on attainable facts (Hertzler 312). Societies based on facts alone are societies lacking sensation.
