Participants were recruited for the study through multiple media channels including various newspaper advertisements, Craigslist, radio stations, and bulletin boards at local businesses. We took every effort to include a broad range of people in all age groups so we could strengthen the external validity of the research. Respondents were asked about neurological diseases and psychological histories. Those who were on antidepressants, antipsychotics, or had a history of neurological disease were excluded so that medicine or central nervous system diseases would not be confounding variables. The resulting participants were 100 adults aged 18 through 81. Fifty-three Caucasians, 17 Hispanics, 15 African Americans, 9 Pacific Islanders, 5 Asian, and 1 American Indian made up our participants. Fifty adults were randomly chosen to be in the control group and the other fifty adults were in the experimental group. The mean age of the control group was 50 years old and the mean age of the experimental group was 49 years old. 50% of the participants were female and 50% were male in each group.

We introduced them to the Dynamic Hatha Yoga DVD and we started a 90-minute session. A certified yoga instructor was in the room, helping with alignment of poses and answering questions. After this class we asked that participants come back and complete the DVD session one more time two days later. These initial yoga sessions were done without measurement of the dependent variable to allow the participants to learn the routine.
