At a very young age I learned the importance of developing a strong moral compass, strong work ethic and exhibiting modesty. As the youngest child in a family of seven, I took it upon myself to compete with my family members at every opportunity that presented itself. Whether the activity was athletic, academic or music related, I viewed these moments as opportunities to not only improve myself but also to grow closer to my family members. For anyone whom has felt impassioned about being the greatest at something, it is difficult to admit when you have been defeated. Although defeat is certainly not a desirable outcome, I believe it is imperative to react with a strong moral compass and exhibit modesty at all times. From gathering medical data in patient charts to presenting statistical data analysis to C-level leadership, I have demonstrated effective and thorough best practice. The analyst position has broadened my interpersonal skills and problem-solving abilities, both of which are critical in any industry. I have been lucky to have the opportunity to present opportunities for improvement to leadership and participate in improving hospital practices that result in better patient outcomes. As CMS and The Joint Commission release new quality measures that get reported to the public, it is imperative for hospital systems to improve practices internally which in turn result in higher quality care. Every day in our lives, we desire to be perfect to please others. No matter how hard we try, if we do not achieve the concept of being perfect, then we will feel like failure. For example, every year at the Olympics, a newly crowned Olympic champion receiving a gold medal persuades young athletes to worry about winning a medal in every competition they compete. If they do not win a medal in a certain competition, then all their hopes are vanished for the next competition. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) have recently begun requiring hospitals to report to the public how they are doing on patient care. Brown, Donaldson and Storer Brown (2008) introduce and explain how facilities can use quartile dashboards to transform large amounts of data into easy to read and understandable tool to be used for reporting as well as to determine areas in need of improvement. By looking at a sample dashboard for an inpatient rehab unit a greater understanding of dashboards and their benefits can be seen. The sample dashboard includes four general areas, including nurse sensitive service line/unit specific indicators, general indicators, patient satisfaction survey indicators and NDNQI data. The overall performance was found to improve over time. There were areas with greater improvement such as length of stay, than others including RN care hours and pressure ulcers. The areas of pressure ulcers and falls did worse the final quarter and can be grouped under the general heading of patient centered nursing care.
