We see ads everywhere though-out our day even if we know it or not. Ads that make an attempt to persuade us one way or another. It could be to persuade someone into buying a product or even helping children that are in need. Either way, all these ads use certain persuasive methods, which include ethos, pathos or, logos, to get peoples attention. I saw an ad created by the National Association for Gun Rights. Obviously this ad is trying to let people that we have a right to have own guns. The ad shows a woman pointing a gun with the words “Mama didn’t raise a victim”. I’ve decided that the author was targeting woman that can presumably be victims of assault/abuse at any time. Given this information, the author is using pathos to let us know of the dangers that can be encountered at any given time as well as ethos because of the organization promoting the ad and even a bit of logos. …show more content…
The National Association for Gun Rights uses pathos because there is a woman handling a gun and also a sentence that states, “Mama didn’t raise a victim”.
This tells us that she is not going to be a victim of any sort. She can be a victim of crimes ranging from being robbed to being assaulted physically or sexually. Mama could have two meanings. A literal meaning, which is that her actual mother raised her not to be a victim. Something else that was noticed in the ad was the Liberty Bell. The Liberty Bell symbolizes American Independence and liberty means being able to speak and act freely. Which leads us to the second meaning of the word Mama in the sentence. The word Mama could figuratively mean the United States as a whole. In the United States we have rights, one of them being the right to bear arms as stated in the 2nd
Amendment. People want to feel safe and if they know how to use a gun it might help. The woman is standing in an open field while wearing eye and ear protection, which says that she could possibly be practicing with targets that are beyond the picture. Learning how to use her gun just in case she is victimized. This emphasizes the logos used in the ad. It is very important to know gun safety and also how to properly handle a gun. On the ad there is a website that links you to The National Association for Gun Right’s website nationalgunrights.org. I believe that it is a credible website that will tell us all about the association and give us a little more information about what it is. Ads all around attempt to bring a point across and try to persuade people into doing something. Just like The National Association for Gun Rights ad telling us that people shouldn’t be victimized and if so, they should have a right to protect themselves. While persuading someone a company can use ethos, pathos, or logos to try and accomplish their goal. Usually a company emphasizes on one persuasive method, but the other two can also be found in their ad just like The National Association for Gun Rights ad that used all three. Pathos was used more because of the woman who was saying that her mama didn’t raise a victim, but the author of the ad also used logos and ethos.
Every child dreams of meeting or becoming just like their favorite character. Kids will do just about anything to get their parents to buy the product. In 2010 the ASPCA (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) came out with a commercial that would shock the advertisement industry. The effectiveness of this commercial is proven, simply by watching the reactions of the commercial’s viewers. For those who have never seen the video it has a very sad and morose tone to it. The commercial begins with showing pictures and videos of suffering animals with the song “Angel” playing in the background. While this is going on the narrator of the commercial (Sarah McLachlen) is softly talking about the suffering and abuse that these unfortunate animals go through. Through many different rhetorical techniques the viewers are many times brought to tears after watching this commercial. When thinking of pieces of Rhetoric that demonstrates the use of pathos, the first thing I think of is this commercial. The sole purpose of this commercial is to emotionally compromise the audience until eventually the viewers will donate money to the cause. This video is so affective at completing this goal because of the way it connects to the viewers, and the way it uses many different methods to attack the viewer’s emotions.
Inside out is a movie about a girl named Riley Anderson who is born with five emotions joy, sadness, fear, disgust and anger. These emotions are housed in Riley’s mind called headquarters. Each emotion plays a very big role in Riley’s life because they chose how she should feel during every second of the day since she was born. Rhetoric has been around for many centuries and idea has stayed the same, but the way we receive this information is changing. When, thinking about history one can think about it as boring. It captures attention by using a well-known character, a short but effecting statement, and a simple color scheme to draw attention. Doing so helps grab the reader and then further deliver the message of pro-choice and that it’s a woman’s choice to do with her body as she pleases.
