My artifact is an essay focusing on a theme from Everybody Leaves,arguing about how the author reveals the theme and proving it with 6 pieces of evidence. I learned the world can be a cruel place for many individuals, I consider myself blessed to have been born in San Francisco.I also learned about how other people live their life everyday, struggling to get by, wondering what will they eat, if they eat, and overall the pain of poverty and how it can affect an entire community. I used the book to find evidence and better understand the situation of its community through the eyes of Nieve Guerra. My essays main idea was to show how the life of one individual affected by the choices of others. It shows how the individual has no control over her own life and how she never had a choice to begin with. the author reveals the theme of the story. I analyzed the book looking for evidence and revealing how it relates to the theme to create my essay. I went with my particular theme because I have already seen many examples in the story and it was the only theme that really caught my attention.
The theme talked about one individual already having her destiny chosen for her. In order to start this essay I had to come up with a hook, a theme about the book, find evidence from the book to back it up, and a counter argument to show that I can protect my argument. I formed my essay in TIEDIED format and wrote a timed essay to know how long it would take to write my essay. The leadership skill I used the most was Thinking Critically by finding evidence in the boot, connecting the evidence to my theme, coming up with a way to engage the reader and finally thinking of a counter argument. Without a doubt, there will be many essays in college, I am even using these skills in my Common application questions by finding evidence to support the prompt I am writing about. In addition, I used the “Engaged Scholar” Core value by meeting the deadlines each assignment is due and protecting my argument from my counter-argument with evidence and
inferences. The easy part of the essay for me is connecting my evidence to my theme since I looked for evidence with the intent of having it support my argument. The challenging part was finding 6 pieces of evidence because that is a lot of evidence for one argument and it involves a lot of skimming through pages. The phrase “This reveals where Nieve’s life took a wrong turn, but she was not behind the wheel, metaphorically speaking.”,reveals my use of metaphors and how I use them to show a connection from my evidence to my thesis. It adds variety to my discussions and a clever way to support my argument. Throughout my high school experience, not only do I believe I gained new skills, but only improved on my skills as a writer. I can annotate more precisely, find ways to organize evidence with improvised techniques, connect my work to the outside work and cite evidence. I still believe I have a long way to go in feeling confident in my writing skills because I believe there is always room for improvement and writing has endless possibilities. I am not sure about College writing because all this time I have had help from other people and college is completely different from High-school.
NOTE: This isn’t even close to how I would like the essay to be laid out. I’m just writing paragraphs and eventually I will get them in an order I like them and revise.
However, when it came time to write the essay, I was confronted with my old enemy, writing. Writing and I have a history, I have never enjoyed being in the presence of writing, due to its both mentally and physically taxing requirements. Despite our deeply rooted feud, there are times where I cannot simply dismiss writing, and generally with help such as guided activities, exemplars, and therapy; Writing and I can put aside our differences for a brief moment of time. One example of this is in my argument, In the beginning sentence I feel that I was able to reach what was expected of me by created a strong counter argument and quickly proving it wrong: “Some might argue that if an individual has grown fond of an illusion, then why wake them from that joy? Now, that is a fair point, but as we see in the book, if they wake up, they realize how unhappy they truly are.” As I face more and more of these assignments where I am forced to implement writing, I grow more accustomed to the process. On this essay the main difficult I had was failure to discuss one topic statement in one paragraph. On each paragraphs there were a mix up idea that it was difficult for a reader to fully understand the main message on each paragraph. The other difficulty I had was using a proper punctuation. I have tried to address those issues with reading English punctuation resources and also from a wonderful feedback I got from my professor. The classes first major writing assignment was simple for the most part in which we were given a clear cut path on what to do. The objective was to analyze an article from a book and explain to the audience of what it was about. I chose the article “Land Of The Giants” by Alex Tizon because the story resonated with me because i am also an immigrant like Alex and many of his experiences i went through as well. The only minor trouble that was presented was the word count and personally i am someone who likes to get straight to the point but with this essay i had to expand and explain my perception of the article.
Writing essays was never my forte, it just never came easy to me like it would to others. Since other subjects came easy to me and I had to focus more than others on writing, I had a negative attitude toward the process as a whole. During this summer semester, I was able to grow as a writer, and gain a more positive attitude toward how I write and a better feel for writing in college. God, I hate narrative essays. You have to write about your own personal experiences and expect to get a three-page paper out of it. I have no events in my life that would fit a three-page paper. The events in my life are either to foggy in my mind, are too insignificant in my mind to fit a three-page paper, or are too big and broad to be able to fit in an essay and would need a 500-page book to explain. I do far better at other kinds of essays than narratives, such as the persuasive paper. I look forward to those kinds of essays more than I look forward at all to doing any more narrative essays. The first four weeks of CR510 have prompted this student to reflect on her years of teaching in the public school setting. Having experienced many similar complexities to the ones in the text, this student is sympathetic to the challenges facing those in the education system and is eager to find opportunities to offer a better solution for all involved. CR510 has strengthened this student's belief that a third party neutral can provide valuable benefits to educational systems at all levels.
I have learned many things throughout the course of the term, including such things as: how to write an essay and how to improve on essays that I have already written, how to locate and composite better research through the use of numerous resources found at the campus library, the internet, and the “Common Sense” textbook, how to cite research, examples, and quotations properly within the contents of my research paper as well as document it accurately according to MLA standards. Through the exploration of the “Subjects and Strategies” textbook, I have learned nine different methods used when writing an effective essay and how the different writing styles affect the overall theme and tone of the essay when used properly. This past semester, I have encountered many difficulties when trying to write these essays, but through the use of the textbooks, the aide of the instructor, and once I was able to classify the different types of essays and styles, I found them possible to overcome.
The greatest difficulty that I came across doing the first essay was retracing the past, retracing the sadness. Having to bring back sad memories that made my life terrible at the time.
