As I browsed through the HHMI website looking for an investigator to do this summary on, I became intrigued by Dr. Eva Nogales. Dr. Nogales, a female researcher, is someone who I strive to be like. She represents that women should not be discriminated against merely for being women and that all of us, regardless of our cultural background, can do great things. Eva Nogales was born in Madrid, Spain during a time when science was vastly changing and growing. She obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in physics and solid-state physics in 1988 from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, which, like the name says, is in her hometown of Madrid. Later in1992, she earned her Ph.D. in the UK from Keele University, where she worked on her thesis on the structural dynamics of tubulin assembly. Dr. Nogales now works as a professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of California, Berkeley and is a Senior Faculty Scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Throughout her life, Dr. Nogales has won numerous awards. These awards include the “Outstanding Performance Award” by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the “Burton Award” by the Microscopy Society of America. Besides awards, Dr. Nogales has many publications and honors to her name, …show more content…

Nogales’s research is centered on two main projects at the moment. Her lab is funded by an NCI project that focuses on the structural biology of DNA repair. The first project deals with the regulation of gene expression and the central dogma of biology. She studies nucleic acid transaction and hopes to go beyond the architecture of molecules used to regulate gene expression by describing conformal landscapes and linking structures to actual functions involved in the expressions of genes and characteristics in organisms. In order to do such research, Nogales and her team focus on elements like eukaryotic DNA replication, eukaryotic transcription, eukaryotic translation initiation, and coupled DNA
