North America has had an elongated history of being influences by different types of people. One group of people that influence North America the most was the Europeans. The Europeans came to the Americas with an imperialistic attitude. They wanted to take over the land and they thought their goods and beliefs were better than those of the Natives. Document 7 shows that the Mother Country sent over many goods of their own for trade from the colonies. The goods from the Mother Country overpowered and took the place of the Native’s goods. Document 3 provides an example of how important the crops and other goods from the Americas were to the Europeans. By taking away many of the Native’s goods and replacing them with their own, the European’s changed life over in the America’s. Also, the Native’s had already been in the Americas for many years before the arrival of the Europeans. They had established a religion, language, and way of life. The Europeans thought they were better than the Native’s. Their main goal was to come to the New World and spread Christianity, and they were determined to do so. Document 1 explains that from the minute they arrived to the Americas, the Europeans were instilling their religion into the Native people through friendship and gifts. The European exploration and colonization resulted in commercial expansion of trade in agricultural products between Europe and America. In some time, colonization resulted in religious tolerance and representative government that have for several years encouraged similar developments in other countries. In addition, early European exploration led to redistribution of human populations as magnitude of people from Europe and Africa moved to America. Before the colonization and exploration period, the Native Americans had established a number of forms of social organization.
Without intention, in 1492 Christopher Columbus initiated an event that is perhaps the most important historical turning point in modern times to the American Continents. . “For thousands of years before 1492, human societies in America had developed in isolation from the rest of the world. ”(P. 4) Christopher Columbus and other European voyagers ended all this beginning in 1492 as they searched for treasure and attempted to spread Christianity. For the first time, people from Europe, Africa, and the Americas were in regular contact. Columbus was searching for one thing and discovered something entirely different.
I believe many of the motivators for the Europeans to move to and colonize North and South America was due to material gain and religious freedom. First I would like to talk about several of the material gains that were either made or expected to be made in the move to explore North and South America's. When the plans were being set out for the new colonies and the different propels that were laid out some of the ideas that were look at heavily were the material gains. One gain was the level of workload in some areas. It was believed that by moving to the United States that farming living conditions and making a living for themselves would be made much easier. An example of this was the Holland plantation. The settlers of that area could see their lives and the life of their colony decreasing severalty due to the heavy amount of work required and only made harder by area that they lived in. They finally made the decision to leave Holland for the United States after seeing that a lot of their children were becoming decrepit at a young age because they had to take on their own work load but also that of their parents which was too much of a burden for most of them to handle. The also had a problem with their youth for several different reasons would decide to leave their colony and peruse their own goals or just move into a larger city usually getting into trouble and going against most of what they were taught by their parents and their families. The situation that this colony was in though was not felt by most of settlers that chose to explore and colonize the Americas. Some of the other material gains that were looked at and therefore a driving force for some people moving to the Americas were farming. It was known that unlike in most of the other regions at the time land was amply in the Americas at that time. With a lot of the new settlers being farmers this was a great thing for them because it gave them a great chance to buy a large enough piece of land for them to sustain themselves as well as a family at the same time being able to look ahead to their children's future knowing that they would be able to do the same and not have to worry about being able to get land.
Throughout the colonial period, both economic and religious concerns contributed to the settling of British North America. The statement that the "economic concerns had more to do with the settling of British North America than did religious concerns" is valid. These economic concerns, as a cause for the colonization of British North America, outweighed the notable religious concerns that arose, and dominated colonial life during and up until the very end of the British colonial era in North America.
What challenges did explorers and colonists face in what became North America from the 1580’s until the 1630’s? Look at geographical, political, economic, indigenous peoples, climate, diet, etc., anything that presented a challenge to survival and development during this period.
The discovery of America by Columbus, in 1492, has long been heralded as a major turning point in world history. It is not only a turning point for European world history, but also a turning point for the history of peoples indigenous to North America. The native populations in North America held equal claims to their lands and the way in which they lived. With an influx of Europeans into the new world it was inevitable that a clash of culture between them would surface. Among the native populations to have contact with the Europeans was the Seneca.
In the 1740's, Great Britain and France both realized that a struggle for control of North America was unavoidable. The French involvement in the fur trade and England's concern with their cash crops caused the desire for more land to grow, which ultimately led to clashes between the two empires.
During the late 1600s and the to the mid-1700s, countries fought for land and power in order to have global domination. While several countries fought for the same cause, resolving their differences was nearly impossible, and this often led to more wars and conflicts. One of the many conflicts concerned the domination of North America. While many European powers competed for control of North America, Britain gained the most territory through the four French and Indian wars, King William's War, Queen Anne's War, King George's War, and the French and Indian War. As these wars progressed, Britain achieved the most success and eventually became the most dominant power in North America.
Through all these changes America was able to emerge as their own. America now has been divided into many countries, but two continents (North and South America). The Americas have been divided culturally too (Anglo-Saxon America and Latin America). These formations of continents can be seen through the Christian cosmology. Then the “discovery” of America caused many things to change; such as the map and the transformation of the global economy. Finally the consequences of the West holding so much power created change in the rest of the world to occur.
The Europeans’ preconceived opinion about the Natives Americans had a big impact in the life of the Native Americans . Many Indians died not only because of the diseases that the Europeans carried, but the cruelty of the settlers and the brutality of slavery also contributed to the destruction of the native population. The ones that entitled themselves as Christians and grabbed about their holiness, marched through the continent expelling people from their own land, raping women and killing people. However Europeans did change the way of life in the Americas, in a negative way. In “Of Plymouth Plantation” by William Bradford the viewpoint that Europeans significantly changed the Americas is seen, with accounts from Bradford that stated the uncivilized nature of the Indians and how the Natives were savages towards the migrants. Opposing views are shown in “Coming of Age in the Dawnland” by Charles C. Mann, where it is stated that Natives had large impressive civilizations. These two different excepts discuss how Europeans
occupied and their communities are almost entirely be disrupted and they have been assimilated into a Western culture though their own cultures still remain. These days, the indigenous are living in white-settler society under the control of state powers and in long history, they are being discriminated and exploited. The indigenous people today or even their ancestors face harsh challenges and they have to struggle with their identities in the issue of racism, self determination and assimilation.
The First "Europeans" reached the Western Hemisphere in the late 15th century. Upon arrival they encountered a rich and diverse culture that had already been inhabited for thousands of years. The Europeans were completely unprepared for the people they stumbled upon. They couldn't understand cultures that were so different and exotic from their own. The discovery of the existence of anything beyond their previous experience could threaten the stability of their entire religious and social structure. Seeing the Indians as savages they made them over in their own image as quickly as possible. In doing so they overlooked the roots that attached the Indians to their fascinating past. The importance of this past is often overlooked. Most text or history books begin the story of the Americas from the first European settlement and disregard the 30,000 years of separate, preceding cultural development (Deetz 7).
