The main difference between early maps and contemporary mapping is that contemporary mappings are mostly based on the satellites which is more accurate. On the other hand, early maps were created by simple surveying tools, so they weren’t as accurate as modern maps. The early maps had no lines of longitude either. Map scale and projections in making map takes an important role because they interpret the result of the map’s image. A map scale shows the feature’s size compared to how it is on a map. Projections can determine what type of map it would be. Latitude tells you where something is vertically on a globe and are parallel to the equator. Meanwhile, longitude tells you where something is horizontally on a globe that reaches to the north and south poles. Since, there are 360 degrees of longitude and …show more content…
An example is the corn belt where corn is mainly produced as the predominant crop. Functional Region is an area organized around the node and is linked to the node. Tokyo would be considered a functional region because the most popular and rich is in Tokyo, attracting the area around. Vernacular Region is an area people believe exists as cultured like a senior college student would have a more accurate mental map compared to a new freshmen student. Globalization impacts the scale of the world by declining the economy and culture. Distribution is the arrangement of a feature’s spread over space. The three properties of distribution across space is density, concentration, and pattern. Density is the frequency with which something occurs in space. Concentration is the extent of a feature’s spread over space. And pattern is to show the spatial relationship between members of a population within a habitat that can be classified to the basic patterns: uniform, random, or
Ken Jennings was a map nerd from a young age himself, you will not be surprised to learn, even sleeping with an old creased atlas at the side of his pillow, most kids his age were cuddling with a trusted blanket- Jennings was not. As he travels the world meeting people of kindred spirits--map librarians, publishers, geocachers, and the engineers behind google maps. Now that technology and geographic unknowing is increasingly insulting us from the space and land around us, we are going to be needing these people more than ever. Mapheads are the ones who always know exactly where they are and...
Latitude is used to measure the distance north or south of the equator. Longitude is used to measure the distance east and west of the prime meridian. Latitude can simply be measured by measuring the height of the sun. The process of determining longitude is a much more complicated matter. One reason
Historical geographer JB Harley wrote an essay on Map Deconstruction in 1989, in which Harley argues that a map is more than just a geographical representation of an area, his theory is that we need to look at a map not just as a geographical image but in its entire context. Harley points out that by an examination of the social structures that have influenced map making, that we may gain more knowledge about the world. The maps social construction is made from debate about what it should show. Harley broke away from the traditional argument about maps and examined the biases that govern the map and the map makers, by looking at what the maps included or excluded. Harley’s “basic argument within this essay is that we should encourage an epistemological shift in the way we interpret the nature of cartography.” Therefore Harley’s aim within his essay on ‘Deconstructing the Map’ was to break down the assumed ideas of a map being a purely scientific creation.
In the field of academia, ethnographic studies are often overlooked as a serious source and reviewed as literature for the mass populace. Because of the often common language, fluid writing styles, format, and production of typical ethnographies, it is much more appealing and attainable to popular culture than the research within a scholarly journal or anthology. Although, perhaps instead of deeming ethnographic work unworthy of a scholarly title due to the appeal it possess, historians should relish in this relativity new form of research for its popularity. Ethnographic studies provide readers with a rare and untarnished micro historic view of the customs of a particular culture or individuals within said culture. Opposing most academia, these studies can sometimes be void in political agenda and personal biases, providing the audience with more objective material. Ethnographies often allow readers to see private and intimate moments within the milieu of the subject which is not often reserved for public life, which is the typically sphere of scholarly study; because of this tendency, individuals and groups which lack a strong public voice are frequently the foci of ethnographic studies. Throughout history women have often been the victims of such marginalization, with a recent focus on Eastern and Islamic women. Considering the previous, Muslim women and gender have been the center of contemporary ethnographic studies, giving a voice to non-Westernized Muslim women and providing a natural research of gender relations with little bias or political agenda.
The effects of cultural traditions and institutions are primary factors influences that determine the ideologies of gender and sexuality within societal sects. Authors have explored the theology of the various origins of these elements within society through the science fiction genre and how these elements lead to discrimination and isolation. Authors’ concepts of social structures that formed perceptions of gender and sexuality are created by desensitizing sex through a systematizing of sexual desires and actions.Western culture and society has inserted traditionally social policy in regard to gender and sexuality through religious institutions, while propagating xenophobia
Gene mapping is currently being used to identify genes that can put people at risk for illness and to help the development of new medicines. Scientists hope to use gene mapping to lead to advancement in medicines, the treatment to disease, and its aid in disease prevention. Genetic mapping was the initial step in the Human Genome Project (human genome project). The Human Genome Project identified thousands of DNA sequences and located important standards they called landmarks. Scientist use these landmarks to tell them where each fragment of DNA came from. These maps would be used to locate sick genes, diseases, or abnormal genes (genome.gov).
Segregation in educational institutions taking place in the United States is not often talked about. People may consider apartheid schooling taking place presently to a nation that does not respect basic human rights. Thus, the injustices taking place in public schools are not easily classified because it is commonplace to many. It can be argued that apartheid schooling was never completely dismantled in the United States. Jonathan Kozol’s book The Shame of the Nation (2005) provides evidence and insight to apartheid within the educational system that children are currently experiencing. The structure in children’s curriculum, the way they are spoken to as well as the funding public schools are funded are examples to the inequalities that children face. Conceptually, structural violence is what keeps educational injustices to recur.
Thinking about normal social interactions and normal social behaviors, I think of comfortable. When I sit down with a friend, a usual routine is followed, “Hey, how are you, what’s new?” (e.g. My turn, your turn). These questions between my friend and I include eye contact, attention, and facial expression. Usually, I feel that I give my friend my undivided attention. Other normal characteristics include: remembering what the person has just said so a comment can be made, as well as each comment is appropriate and in relation to the current topic. Moreover, the duration between each question or comment is short.
So what exactly is a geographical perspective, well according to Penn state “A geographic perspective is a way of looking at and understanding the world. When
Every day, whether it is through our families, classes, churches, regional location, workplace, or the media we obtain unique views on how we feel the world should work in politics. Personally, during my lifetime these factors of political socialization, or the process of becoming politically aware, have led me to become a very liberal person for the majority of political issues. There is one view of mine that tends to lean toward the conservative side, but other than that from abortion to welfare I have a liberal ideology. My experiences with my close-knit family, conservative population at school, and the media are the largest influences that have shaped me into who I am today, and why I have these strong views on economic and social

A map can be defined as a clear representation of any physical space or a place in existence. “The area depicted on maps can range from the entire world to just a neighborhood, and most maps are depicted on a flat two-dimensional plane. The purpose of a map is to describe spatial relationships of specific features that the cartographer or mapmaker chooses to represent.” (James Ford Bell Library) In using this analogy, the title, I believe, is referring to the models and representations in various areas of knowledge and not a cartographical map per se. Simplicity is the state of being simple and uncomplicated. It is widely held that the most effective knowledge is the simplest and the most straightforward, both to explain and to use, although this is not always the case. According to Ramm, simplicity embraces exactly the right details, the right difficulties, the right complexity, but because everything is tied together in the right way, you are left with a sense of clarity, and a sense that everything belongs exactly where it is. Simplicity is achieved when everything means something. (Ramm) Here it is seen that in the acquisition of knowledge, simpliticy is a good thing, ergo if a map is simplified, it must be good and useful.
In the article “Your World Map is Wrong. Like, Really, Really Wrong”, the author starts off by naming the weakness of the Mercator projection, which was drawn by Gerardus Mercator in 1569. It is said that the Mercator projection is not to scale, and the location of each country is different from what the Mercator projection taught scholars. For example, it gives obvious situations such as the comparison between the size of Africa and the size of Greenland. On the Mercator projection, these two appear to have around the same land mass, however, in reality, Africa is about 14 times larger than Greenland. It then continues the article with the fact that the Mercator projection is heavily influenced by imperialist power that occured in the past.
Geography is a branch of science that seeks to learn about the physical aspects of the earth, and how human activity is having an impact on it. War, on the other hand, is a militaristic conflict between two opposing parties, where violence and strategic thinking plays a big part. War relies on several aspects in Geography to help win battles such as using maps to have an overview of a battlefield, understanding how the land can be used to a commander’s advantage, and so on. Wars or other kinds of militaristic conflicts can sometimes occur due to the nature of Geography in many ways: expanding the territory of a country, conquering another nation for its resources, or for other reasons. Geography matters very much in warfare because the types
An image as perceived in "reality" is thought to be a function of two real variables, for instance, a(x, y) with a certain level of brightness of the image at the real coordinates (x, y). Further, an image may be considered to contain sub-images now and mentioned to as areas of-investment or ROI’s, or basically regions. This idea reflects the way that images as often as possible contain build-ups of items each of which can be the idea for a region.
