Ethics in Computer Forensics

Ethics are the policies you internalize and use to measure your functioning. The criterion that others apply to you or that you’re obligated to adhere to by external forces, such as licensing bodies, can be called ethics, but they are more accurately described as laws. Many professions now call these laws codes of professional conduct or responsibility (Bill Nelson, 2010).

People need ethics to help keep their balance, especially in troubling and disputatious situations, and for guidance on their values. Ethics also help you keep self-respect and the respect of your profession. Because computer forensics examiners don’t have the same formal, detailed codes of conduct that professions such as medicine and the law have, relying on an internal code of ethics might be more important. Also, your internal standards, related to a conceptual, religious, or moral position, can be higher than standards effected by codes of professional conduct.
