Operating in the role of a supervisor requires you to be ethical and fair in your all your decision making. An ethical supervisor enforces the policies of the company, build the morale of employees and practice what they preach. Fair treatment should be based on trust and respect of the employee. All complaints of offensive behavior and unfair treatment should be handled immediately according to company policies. Discipline is sometimes needed to let an employee know their work performance needs improving. Supervising with ethics, fair treatment and discipline at work is a responsibility that ensures unfairness and injustices are avoided.
Ethics in the workplace are simply doing the right thing. Ethics is the glue that holds a business together. A company’s ethical principles are the ways employees are expected to act in the workplace and supervisors are to ensure this takes place. When I think of ethics, I think of the angel on my left shoulder telling me to do the “right” thing, and the devil on my right, tempting me to join the dark side. This scenario deals with what is “right” or what is “wrong” and where my morals will lie in the end. But who is to say what is right and wrong?
