Ethical Self-Awareness (5) Many people begin their college journey by saying, "I am the first one from my family to go to college." In my case, I am not. Three generations of my family have graduated from college. Since the day I was born, it was an expectation that I would attend college. My experiences that led up to this moment have impacted my outlook on my future. Growing up, I had the privilege of participating in extracurricular activities. These included piano, soccer, karate, and volunteering. Through these activities, I have discovered a great deal about myself, as well as the world around me. First, people think that it’s a tradeoff: you either work on quality or you work on efficiency. Efficiency could be looked at as effective because the solution comes quickly. However, the solution may not completely eradicate the patient’s full problems because it was analyzed in a short amount of time. This can cause mistrust between the patient and the healthcare provider. Second, people often assume quality costs more. In fact, if we think about quality from the patient’s eyes, the person who’s seeking the service, there’s a lot of waste in that system and we have to consider cost and quality together. To patients, waste is frustration and unnecessary use of their time and energy. We can understand it by measuring what they value and meet their needs. The challenge is to ask the question: what are we going to do to make care better so it’s more affordable for the person paying for insurance, paying co-pays and using the care delivery system? When speaking in terms of ethics, quality would win over efficiency since the healthcare provider and healthcare system acknowledges a patient’s essential demands and not be concerned about
