Every person needs to have some basic principles to guide their lives. These principles for example can define, in a clear and simple way, what is right and what is wrong. They help shape how we will live our life and facilitates the decisions we may need to take specially at difficult times or crossroads. These principles are molded by parents, relatives and groups we may be part of as we grow and help to form our character as individuals. As we become adults most of those principles are part of us and who we are.
Similarly, businesses are required to define ethical principles under which they will operate. These will be the guidelines that all employees at all levels must follow to ensure that all business related activities are conducted

We experience it in our personal lives therefore it is easy to relate to it in a working environment. As a leader in marketing, we want to ensure that we properly inform the public the attributes and any potential risks of the product we are promoting. This will maintain a good company reputation and the team members will learn the promotions they work on must be trustful on what they communicate and the benefits claimed. That will gain us the trust of the customers and those that make business with us. At the same time, we need to be honest with the stakeholders in regards of product quality and meet the commitments made. We have to accept the consequences of every marketing strategy put in place and related decisions. Today, when we look at our responsibility we have to consider not only the customers and stakeholders but also the impact on the environment and the society in general. Today, an interesting challenge is working with other cultures where you need to learn about their customs and environment to make an effective strategy and still ensure that we are being responsible with customers, the community and the stakeholders.
I have family members that work at companies that make business in countries where bribes and kickbacks are common. We have one resident in the long-term facility who has stage four cancer of spinal cord and he has been suffering from intense pain. Every time when I enter his room, he cries and implore to the god that he can minimize his suffering. He has prescription of hydromorphone 8 mg every 4 hourly PRN , oxycodone 5 mg every 6 hourly and 50 mcg of fentanyl path change every 3rd day. After giving all scheduled and PRN medicine his pain level remains same as before. When I see that patients I feel like to give highest dose of medicine as well as alternative pain management therapy so that he can have some comfort but ethically I have no right to do that. Many philosophers have attempted to answer this question, but it is hard to make out what the right answer would be or even if it can be answered. Who would be able to tell? That’s why we as individuals must make up our own minds on what is right or wrong. We can only hope to find our own moral path. In “The Essential Agrarian Reader,” Norman Wirzba claims that “it is only as we are faithful to the particularities and demands of place and accept responsibility for our actions in those places, that we can claim to be moral beings at all” ( Wirzba 95). Without recognizing the effects of our actions on a certain place we cannot consider ourselves moral individuals. In this paper, I will argue that this claim is correct because without a sense of accountability, a connection to morality cannot be made.

J.S. Mill’s principle of utility is explained as actions are right as they tend to gain happiness, and wrong as they tend to reduce happiness. Mill defines happiness as, “pleasure and the absence of happiness is pain.” He argues that pleasure can differ in quality and quantity, and that more complex pleasures are ranked higher. Mills also places people’s achievements of goals, such as a virtuous living, should be counted as part of their happiness. When Mill states that the principle of utility is the “First Principle” of morality he is ranking the principle of utility highest because that in order to know what the boundaries of morality are, it is necessary to know how actions should be accounted. The first principle dictates the rest of the principles of morality because it illuminates what the right thing to do is, and that is to maximize happiness. Happiness is the goal of morality, and this is why Mill believes that morality must have a first principle.
Business ethics are a set of moral rules that govern how a business operates, how people should be treated within an organization, and how business decisions are made. They are a crucial part of employment and in managing a sustainable business, mainly because of the serious consequences that can result from decisions made with a lack of regard to ethics. Even if you don’t believe that good ethics don’t contribute to profit levels, you should realize those poor ethics have a negative effect on your bottom line in the long-run.
