Managers of today’s businesses face many different issues that are drastically different from the working environment even just 20 years ago. The 21st century is full of many dilemmas that managers will face and continue to ensure as time goes on. With the rapid availability of personal electronics and social media, managers have many issues of ethics related to these two fields. This is genuinely unique 21st century issue and since they are still new, managers are still coming up with creative ways to combat the problems that they face related to personal electronics and social media in terms of information spillage.

The right for employees to receive fair wages for work performed is considered a universal ethic right in today’s world. It is covered under the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938. In this act, companies are required to perform ethically by paying their employees fair wages for the work they performed. It also set the standard of a 40 hour work week as well how over time is paid as well. This concept of ethics was new at the time but now is considered the norm. Labor’s rights, this issue have been bothering many worker since the 19th century and can still be a problem today. As John L. Lewis has said in his speech “I repeat that labor seeks peace and guarantees its own loyalty, but the voice of labor, insistent upon its rights, should not be annoying to the ears of justice or offensive to the conscience of the American people” (John L. Lewis), which under his words meant that labor is something that can be done right and peacefully but it needs rules and benefits that come with those rules which labor asks for and when labor asks for those rules and benefits it shouldn’t be taken like some annoying kid’s demands but more as something that needs to be done and done with a right mind set. Labor today consists of a man or woman going to work, working their hours, and finally getting paid for those hours at the end of the week, at least a minimum of $7.50 an hour (United States Department of Labor), but before it wasn’t like that before many workers would get paid very poorly even thought they would work for a lot of hours and they wouldn’t get benefits from their work or safety when working such as in the mines like the mine workers, but one man stood up for them and his name was John L. Lewis (John Llewellyn Lewis, Encyclopedia).
Companies have determined what an employee does while at work or away from work on social media can greatly affect the company’s image. For example, the National Football League (NFL) has a code of conduct policy that holds employees of a team and organization accountable for the employee’s comments on social media. An employee, on their own time, is no longer a private entity, acting on their own accord without consequences from their employer. This new approach to managing a company’s image or message dictates how a company monitors and responds to acts, whether they are behavior, speech or actions they find inappropriate.
Ethics are basically the procedures of personal acts that are based on ideas or a person, about what is ethically good or bad and they are range of statistics that involves these statistics. So basically, ethics are rules a person sets for himself or herself about what is ethically right or wrong. They involve legal issues and if something is illegal, it does not always mean that it is unethical, consequently if something is ethical, it does not mean it is legal.
