School counselors are faced with tough situation on a daily basis. Issues faced can range from Child Abuse, Student Safety, Suicide, Criminal Activity and Harassment on multiple levels. A recent issue that I was faced with was in regards to my student Rachel who is in her 8th grade year. I have seen Rachel for three sessions so far and she is involved in a social group to help with friendship issues. In the past she has cut herself and my understanding is that this behavior has subsided. Recently she told me that she has started back up with cutting herself to relieve the pain and pressures she feels from her parent’s divorce and the war zone that her home has become. Rachel begs me not to call her parents and promises to implement the stress-relieving exercise that I have taught her. In this scenario I am faced with more than one dilemma. The first dilemma that I am faced with is the fact that Rachel is cutting herself and that she may cause harm to herself with the potential of it resulting in death if it continues. I am also faced …show more content…
I will need to consider both the parental rights and the minors’ rights in my decisions. Confidentiality is an ethical standard set forth by a profession, whereas privileged communication is granted by law (Ledyard, 1998). Hendrix (1991) stated that the law supersedes ethics in three mental health situations for minors: reports of being abused, reports of harm to self, or reports of a plan to do harm to another person. As part of the ASCA Ethical Standards school counselors are to inform parents/guardians and/or the appropriate authorities when a student poses a serious and foreseeable risk to self or others. So, it is my duty as a school counselor to report that Rachel is cutting herself to the appropriate individuals and to her
We have one resident in the long-term facility who has stage four cancer of spinal cord and he has been suffering from intense pain. Every time when I enter his room, he cries and implore to the god that he can minimize his suffering. He has prescription of hydromorphone 8 mg every 4 hourly PRN , oxycodone 5 mg every 6 hourly and 50 mcg of fentanyl path change every 3rd day. After giving all scheduled and PRN medicine his pain level remains same as before. When I see that patients I feel like to give highest dose of medicine as well as alternative pain management therapy so that he can have some comfort but ethically I have no right to do that. He is hospice but he has no comfort at all. Following are the nine steps of Uustal ethical decision making model.
...rt of the medical profession, the therapists are expected to maintain the confidentiality of their clients. A psychologist must be able to acquire a client’s trust in order to keep quality confidentiality amongst the two parties. Only on seriously occasions should the patient’s records be shared, under certain other conditions the psychotherapy records of a minor can be reviewed by others without prior written consent. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), psychologists can usually give way the patient records to parents or legal guardians. Some of the ethical rules that apply to the practice of child and adolescent psychiatry are clear and generally agreed upon For example, rules against sexual contact or harsh or abusive treatment are encoded as boundary violations. A psychotherapist must be able to respect the boundaries of the client.
Counselors may want to reduce students’ stress, but a blanket ban is not the solution. Students are often well aware of

While taking data, I have worked with this child to increase behaviors with reinforcement, teach new skills, and to reduce interfering behaviors, which can include self-injury. During the past year, I completed an online suicide talk session, which explores suicide prevention as well as becoming a Certified Mental Health First Aider. I also became a suicide and crisis line volunteer, giving emotional support for individuals experiencing emotional or situational distress, various forms of mental illness and in need of general information or referrals. The callers varied from transgender individuals to youth to other ethnic minority groups. I learned to not minimize grief or experiences because everyone is entitled to their feelings and every individual grieves and experiences trauma in various
Abortion has been a political, social, and personal topic for many years now. The woman’s right to choose has become a law that is still debated, argued and fought over, even though it has been passed. This paper will examine a specific example where abortion is encouraged, identify the Christian world views beliefs and resolution as well as the consequences of such, and compare them with another option.
Today, in our society, many young girls (and boys) commit suicide because of the stressors around them and the pain that they harbor. If parents, guardians, family members and even instructors knew more about how to spot a child going through stress and/or depression, then maybe more lives would be saved and the percentage of young girls and teens who commit suicide would decrease. This information is very helpful and has given me answers as to why my little sister was stressed and went through depression. Many factors at home and school caused it and without the safety of her parents, she had a harder time getting through it. She even decided to quit school for a while because she couldn’t focus. Noticing the change in an adolescent girls’ attitude and demeanor can help immensely and even keep negative affects—to her brain—from
School counseling has evolved over the years into a significant component of the educational system. School counselors are taking on new roles in schools as leaders, working with “school administration and staff in developing student attitudes and behavior which are necessary to maintain proper control, acceptable standards of self-discipline and a suitable learning environment within the school” (Secondary School Counselor 2012). Counselors work in “diverse community settings designed to provide a variety of counseling, rehabilitation, and support services” (Counselors, 2010). When working in a school district as a counselor, you can either be an elementary school counselor, middle school counselor or a high school counselor. This essays explores a recent interview with a high school counselor.
In the profession of Dental Hygiene, ethical dilemmas are nearly impossible to avoid, and most hygienists at some point in their professional life will have to face and answer ethical questions. Some ethical conflicts the dental hygienist may encounter can be quite complex and an obvious answer may not be readily available. In the article Ethical Decision Making, Phyllis Beemsterboer suggests an ethical decision-making model can aide the dental hygienist in making appropriate decisions when confronted with an ethical situation, and that the six-step model can serve dental hygienists in making the most advantageous ethical decision (2010).
A woman approaches you at a grocery store and asks if you have seen her phone. The last place she seen it was in her purse and Oddly enough your best friend had just pulled out the same exact phone she is describing to you. What do you do. Do you tell the woman her phone was stolen by your childhood friend or do you simply turn a cold shoulder and go about your business.
An ethical dilemma is only examined in a situation which has the following conditions; the first condition takes place in a situation, when an individual has to make a decision on which course of action is best. The second condition is there must be more than one course of action to choose from. The third action is no matter what course of action is taken, certain ethical principles are conceded. In other terms, there is no perfect result. When defining what forms an ethical dilemma, it is important to make a division between ethics, morals, values, laws and policies.
Everyone in this world has experienced an ethical dilemma in different situations and this may arise between one or more individuals. Ethical dilemma is a situation where people have to make complex decisions and are influenced based on personal interest, social environment or norms, and religious beliefs (“Strategic Leadership”, n.d.). The leaders and managers in the company should set guidelines to ensure employees are aware and have a better chance to solve and make ethical decisions. Employees are also responsible in understanding their ethical obligations in order to maintain a positive work environment. The purpose of this case study is to identify the dilemma and analyze different decisions to find ways on how a person should act
Counselors are more prone to be confronted with clients who are suicidal or dealing with mental health issues that are causing them to be a danger to themselves and others. Therefore, it is essential for counselors to have the knowledge and skills in order to be prepared when confronted with a crisis situation. In addition, counselors must be able to identify risk factors for their clients to avoid any wrongdoings that can cause detrimental consequences. Because it is the counselor's ethical obligation to protect clients from unnecessary risk of harm. Essentially, without the adequate training in suicide assessment and intervention, counselors can engage in practices that are not in alignment with the counseling ethical standard “do no harm”.
There are many aspects of ethical actions. The way a person thinks about his or her actions, the things that the person decides to do as well as how the person conveys him or herself all falls under ethical action. Before this course, I believed ethical actions only pertains to one’s own individual decisions on how he or she acts, thinks or speaks. Going through this course known as Giving Voice to Values I have discovered a different way of looking at what is known as ethical action. This paper seeks to reflect upon these discoveries that I have made and consider the changes that have taken place in my way of thinking.
