In this memo my goal is to answer each of the five questions regarding the ethical connection between Sheila and David. I will explain the ethical considerations and dilemmas, the communication presented by Sheila, what David could have done differently, what I would have done in the same situation, and how communicator intent impacts the ethics in this case. After answering each question, I will provide a conclusive summary of my answers.
First, the ethical considerations and dilemmas were displayed throughout the situation as Sheila betrayed David by taking credit for his ideas. Sheila should have considered how David felt about her lack of response to his email. David made the right choice by contacting his partner regarding their project. She intended to look better than David in the meeting, which tempted her to select the wrong decision. She made it clear by accepting her manager’s praise that she meant to do what she did thus impacting David’s decision making. He could have decided to make the situation right, however, he chose not to because he could tell by how she acted that she was intending to take credit for his ideas. If a person knows that another person is doing something wrong intentionally, it can change their decision making. If she would have given David praise for the ideas, he would have known she wasn’t intending to leave him out of the presentation. Given that she did the opposite, his feeling of betrayal distracted him from being able to clearly come to a decision to right the situation. In addition, Sheila, as an experienced employee, set a negative example of what is right to do in the workplace and what isn’t.
